California reels as the most destructive wildfire in the state's HISTORY kills at least NINE [tr]

At least nine people have died and 35 are missing in a wildfire in Northern California, while in Southern California thousands of homes are under threat and all of Malibu has been evacuated as two other fires bear down. The Camp Fire in Northern California is now the most destructive in state history, after wiping out the town of Paradise. Not a single resident of Paradise can be seen anywhere in town after most of them fled the burning Northern California community that may be lost forever. Abandoned, charred vehicles cluttered the main thoroughfare, evidence of the panicked evacuation a day earlier. Most of its buildings are in ruin, entire neighborhoods are leveled and the business district has been wiped out. In a single day, this Sierra Nevada foothill town of 27,000 founded in the 1800s was largely incinerated by flames that moved so fast there was nothing firefighters could do. Authorities suspect it may have been started by a malfunction in power lines.

That would have been a wonderful idea! We could have had a bad economy and still have California wildfires at the same time. /sarc

Californians can thank themselves for the tragedy. They voted for politicians and policies for cleaner air, and this fire was the direct result: https://lao.ca.gov/Publications/Report/3798 Check the statements about the VMP program which was crippled by CARB. The CARB regulations are written in such a way that if you perform burns on safe days, that is banned due to low mixing and the possibilitiy of pollution. OTOH if you burn on a high mixing day that is ok and of course it is also dangerous. So agencies and landowners do nothing to avoid liabilitiy from CARB and related lawsuits.

The fault for this tragedy belongs to CARB and the manhy idiots who support CARB.

The blood is on hands of tree huggers who fight clearing of forests.

"Global warming" may be yet another reason that they are avoiding the controlled burning that is critical to preventing these wildfires. It's possible to clear land other ways, but many times more expensive and restricted anyway due to water quality regulations.

I'll say this about global warming though. Looking through a couple thousand years of fire history (charcoal layers) and temperature from proxies, the cooler it is, the more fires there are. That because when it is cooler it is rainier and windier.

The blood of the trees (sap?) is on their hands. If they allowed or performed low intensity burns that remove the brush, the trees would be fine. They have existed that way for thousands of years. Some trees burned this past week were hundreds of years old and had been through many fires before settlement. But those were natural low intensity fires because there were no “brush huggers” letting the brush build up.

I bet fewer than 10% of the residents wanted the forests around Paradise “cleared” before the fire.

It turns out that many people like to live in forested areas.

Malibu and Pompeii have a lot in common. This resembles the Last Days of Pompeii,

It turns out that many people like to live in forested areas.

And in coastal hills with ocean views...with no nearby neighbors. Given the nature of Santa Ana/Diablo winds, there is virtually no way to guarantee fire safety in some of California's most desirable areas. It's like building a beach house on the Outer Banks - a beautiful place, but one day you know you're going to get it.

We have, friends who have a grand daughter who is fighting this fire with other fire fighters.

Last year, she was on the front lines fighting the fires in the wine counties.

She told her grandparents, this fire was more powerful, more dangerous and totally out of control.

Our firefighters need our prayers, and the people who lost homes and maybe loved ones, Thursday.

I enjoy watching natural disaster videos. Tornadoes, well, you can’t make more of those. However, California uses a fake moral reason for greatly increasing fires in its state, so I’m really happy they collectively agree to encourage fires. That doesn’t happen in other states or countries.

Go California! Make American fire videos better!

“I am sure the California political elite will shift the blame to Trump.”

That would be to Trumps credit!

I’d send Trump an extra contribution if it happens!

“let it all burn...who gives a flip....lol..... burn baby burn.”...……….

The bad side of your idea is that those who are “displaced” will move to other states like they have done to Colorado and several other once beautiful places to live, bringing their ideas to those places thus continuing their stupidity somewhere else.

"The blood is on hands of tree huggers who fight clearing of forests."

Proper forest management would pretty much eliminate this kind of problem, as well as removing more CO2 from the air (new growth sucks up far more CO2 than mature forest).
