To: DUMBGRUNT

All I need is a small saucer, some water, a piece of cork, a needle and a magnet. From that and the sky I can navigate anywhere.

Helps knowing where things are ahead of time so I’ll take a map as well.

You may also need a weighted string with knots (kamal) matching the latitude of known positions, an artificial horizon(IIRC Lewis & Clark used mercury?), Watch, knowing the time helps for longitude,A sky chart...
And do not forget your nautical almanac, you can get it on your phone... But you may need to find a Mickey D’s, before the batteries go dead on the phone.
