I saw a bumper sticker that read “I may be old but I saw the great bands live.” True. :-)

Quadraphenia was sheer genius from start to finish.

The Who were long time users of Hiwatt amplifiers, but in the very early days they used Marshalls. There were rumors for decades that Jim Marshall (owner of Marshall Amps) got into a fist fight with Pete Townshend over unpaid bills and threw Townsend out onto the sidewalk. Marshall’s son later said it was just a misunderstanding, no fisticuffs, but the story about the fight is more colorful and has remained around all these years.

In any case, Townshend talked Marshall into building 100 watt amplifiers, something Marshall initially wasn’t interested in. He also got Marshall to build huge speaker cabinets with eight 12” speakers (8X12). The cabinets were too heavy to carry and Marshall built smaller 4x12 cabinets that could be stacked on top of each other (with the upper cabinet being angled at the top to look more stylish), thus the classic Marshall stack was born.

Who’s Next. Their greatest album. Tommy defined the rock opera. And only song worth it on Quadraphenia was Love reign o’er me.

While I love Roger Daltrey's vocals (and despise Pete Townshend's sad attempts at singing), my favorite Who performance has to be "Sparks" from their Woodstock set. Daltrey does nothing in that set but wave a tambourine pointlessly around.

Townshend on guitar, Entwhistle on bass and of course Keith Moon on drums, though - amazing performance. Here's the video, indexed to the actual start of the song. I try to overlook Townshend's ridiculous high-kicks and just appreciate the music lol:

Boring loud group who went about smashing their own instruments. Not fit to even tune a Beatle’s guitar.

Missed them in the day.
Now that I’ve gotten old and in no hurry to die...

Eminence Front is my favorite of theirs. Didn’t even recognize their work.

The Who definitely put their backs into their living.

To this day, I can sing the melody and lyrics to every song on “Tommy” ... in order.

Masters of the power chord. And I always thought Daltrey was far cooler than Jagger.

The one band I regret never having seen.

“On the dry and dusty road
The nights we spend apart alone
I need to get back home to cool, cool rain

I can’t sleep and I lay and I think
The night is hot and black as ink
Oh God, I need a drink of cool, cool rain”

My favs are Who’s Next and Live at Leeds. They didn’t follow the Beatles as much as the Stone — check out the Stones album covers on how close the resemble the Beatles albums. Magic Bus might be a reference to Magical Mystery Tour but if you saw the Who at the Beatles live All You Need is Love broadcast they were on their good behavior. The Stones Rock and Roll Circus is another story.

Saw them on Keith’s last tour. Band was so tight,it was like one person singing and playing all the instruments. Or ... maybe it was the recreational substances ???

Best song they ever had was “My Wife” with Entwistle singing lead.

Saw them live at the Cotton Bowl 1982 on one of their “farewell” tours.

They rocked the stadium. Best concert I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen many.
