A woman in Shamong Township, Burlington County, was found living with 44 dead dogs and 130 living dogs in "deplorable" conditions, State Police said.
Donna Roberts, 65, was charged with animal cruelty Tuesday after State Police from the Red Lion Station inspected her home on Oakshade Road. With the Burlington County Health Department, authorities discovered "evidence of animal cruelty inflicted upon various breeds of dogs on the property," State Police said in a statement.
The odor of animal feces and ammonia permeated the inside of the residence, which caused several responders to feel dizzy and nauseous, State Police said.
The 44 dead dogs were packaged in plastic bags and stored in freezers throughout the residence, State Police said. Four of the 130 living dogs were in critical condition and transported to an emergency veterinary clinic, they said. The other dogs were treated by animal shelter workers.
"Although the circumstances surrounding the demise of the 44 dogs that were discovered inside plastic bags in freezers remain under investigation, the deplorable and inhumane living conditions the rescued dogs were forced to endure is tragic," State Police Col. Patrick Callahan said in a statement. "Troopers take an oath to protect and safeguard life, including the lives and well-being of pets, which can be vulnerable to abuse."
Burlington County Prosecutor Scott Coffina said when contact with Roberts raised concerns about the welfare of animals on the property, the Prosecutor's Office sought a search warrant.
Roberts was released pending court, officials said.

The old woman is insane and needs care. Build mental facilities for long term residents instead of putting them on the street as is done in ****hole countries. The government animal worshipers should be sent back to the old country instead of being allowed to hop like fleas from the northeast to other states in this country.
I’m going to go out on a limb here and give a probable explanation: unless you are physically unable to do stuff you won’t get it but there are people who don’t have the physical health to bury their dogs and so rather than let them rot somewhere they’ll put them in the freezer.
