BTW, my 6th-great grandfather was a militia Captain in the Revolutionary War, and his son, Nathan, my 5th great- was in the Continental Army, and fought at Saratoga.

I am Scots/Irish and Tsalagi (Cherokee)...

My wife and I were at a “soiree” (I would say a party, but that would insult the givers as they were the sort to look down their noses at “commoners”) We were invited because we were neighbors.

A couple of women were talking (bragging) about their ancestors arriving on ships in the 1700’s and starting high class businesses in the mid Atlantic states...

I was listening, not speaking very much, but had heard all the bragging I cared to hear....

I stated to them, “My ancestors probably scalped your ancestors...”

I got wide open eye stares and the room quietened down....My wife and I soon left...ROFL

Actually, my ancestral grandfather [...]

Isn't every grandfather ancestral? What else could he be, but ancestral? He sure can't be your descendant!

Perhaps the word you were looking for is "great-great-great-grandfather," or "great-great-great-great-grandfather," or "direct ancestor."

Regards,

Interesting!

I often find interesting tidbits when I dig around my ancestry. My great-great (give or take a couple “greats”) grandfather was a bodyguard to Joseph Smith when the Mormons had to keep moving west (because no one wanted them around). Having Mormon ancestry is both a curse and a blessing. A curse because I have thousands of relatives, making finding obscure details of my ancestry very difficult, and a blessing because the Mormons keep detailed records.

I didn’t mean to create an issue. As I mentioned, I just short-cut the great, great, great, great, great grandfather thing and used ancestral. Thanks for the correction.......

I also have compassion for the native Indians, very much so. But I don’t understand the current theme of wanting to find Native American DNA in our blood, it seems to be a trend and I just wanted to give a different perspective, having ancestors who were brutally murdered in an Indian massacre. In another post on this thread, i noted that my ancestor was a devout Mennonite and a preacher. He was a pacifist and did not own guns, ironically his wife and many children were scalped, which I find to be an issue even then with the second amendments which didn’t even exist at that time.

“That’s why it’s so nuts removing Indian names from sports teams. Those names were selected because Indians were seen as having desirable characteristics.”

Some ditzy college girl tried got after me for my Indian Motorcycle shirt. I tried to explain that it was meant to be complimentary right down to individual models. The Chief was big, powerful, and dignified, the Scout fast and nimble etc. She was to far gone to understand.

Classic programmed Non-Player Character (NPC) response. It’s a sad thing.

On a related note, I expect the Vikings will soon be deemed politically incorrect for making the now-indigenous black Somali population uncomfortable.

Based on family lore that my great great grandmother on my mother’s side was Shawnee, I took a DNA test a few years back and found out my line is about as white as the driven snow—English, Scots, Irish, north western France, Scandinavia. Given the history of that area, the mix seems about right.

I hope he shares any native recipes he may have. If Indians in Oklahoma enjoyed cooking with crab, perhaps those in South Carolina made buffalo wings

"Curiosity about ancestry has been common for decades. Family trees are educational and helpful in locating relatives."

Very true... I got into it when "Family Tree Maker" first came out... That's been quite a while back... Great fun and fine hobby....
