Texas Roadhouse apologizes for asking breastfeeding mother to cover up

A Texas Roadhouse restaurant in Louisville, Ky., has apologized to a mother who was asked by a manager to cover up while she was breastfeeding her seven-week-old daughter.

Sadie Durbin began nursing her infant daughter while she was dining at the American chain restaurant with her family, she wrote in a now-viral Facebook post, when a manager came over and told her to cover up.

“David Mitchell, a manager at the Texas Roadhouse on Shelbyville Road, brought me a napkin and tried lying it over my 7 week old nursing infant's face as he explained that he had another patron complain and that he really needed me to cover up,” Durbin wrote.

“I politely explained to him it is against the law for him to ask me to cover up and that I was well within my rights to feed my baby,” she continued.

Hardly, since if you think the relative infrequency of women in America whipping out their titty to breast in public is due to the influence of Islam, you are, indeed, an idiot.

A breastfeeding mother doesn’t have enough to carry around without some provincialist’s sense of propriety?

"...but you have no problem with nearly naked women pushed in all media but women actually feeding their babies is somehow so terrible..."

cherry, where did I say I have no problem with naked women being pushed in the media, and I never said women feeding their babies is terrible? I didn't say or imply either of those things.

If you read my posts and are rational about it, you should see that I do not subscribe to either of those things.

This is an emotionally charged subject for people, let's discuss it without putting words into the mouths of others.

The reality is women's breasts mean more to men than a bulge in the chest, and God made them have that effect on men too.

God gave men a sex drive for a purpose. It isn't always rational, but it is there. That said, it is pretty clear that breasts do not exist for one single purpose only, the feeding of children. They also factor into the sexual attractiveness of women to men.

And this isn't simply a reflection of the modern world where you are correct, we are bathed in it. It is an established fact that men have always viewed women's breasts as more than just a container for mother's milk. That is irrefutable and not even open to debate. If you look throughout history, cultures even centuries before the advent of the Roman Empire understood that breasts were attractive to men.

Certainly, there are cultures where women don't have to conceal their breasts, but those cultures are at usually more primitive. And even in those cultures, it is undeniable that the breasts are sexually attractive to the opposite sex.

It is the way God made us, or did after we were forced to leave the Garden of Eden.

Not at all. I’m merely pointing out if “civilization” is marked by modesty, as you infer, islam would seem the obvious pinnacle.

In other words, you’re talking out of your ass.

A bottle is rightly objectionable?

Yes; and can’t you come up with something a bit more substantive than “you’re an idiot?”

Or are you a journalist?

You are an idiot savant? Apparently high functioning, until you speak too long.

"Modesty," in Islam, is enforced upon the weak by force. "Modesty" in Western civilization, is driven by a respect for the sensibilities of others, even if they're not yours. In other words, civilation.

Feeding a baby from a bottle is rightly objectionable? Care to explain why?

Bit of a stretch comparing a breast with a sexual organ.

That's rather the nature of the "slippery slope", isn't it? No matter where you think the limit might be, it will always be surpassed. Human beings poop on the sidewalks of San Francisco. Grown men are allowed access to womens' toilets in Target stores. Children are being taught about anal sex before they've had their first erotic dream. Nothing should surprise you any more. A civil society should demand more modesty and decorum. We've already witnessed the tasteless and repugnant product of accepting less. If you don't think a grown man won't get naked and have a good scratch in a restaurant, then you haven't been to a coffee shop in San Francisco recently. Keep looking the other way and San Francisco becomes the new "norm".

When I said “it is her right, I guess” that was a nod towards the militancy of it.

Heck, people on this thread can barely discuss the issue without completely blowing it out of proportion, I am not surprised that it gained national attention.

People don’t have any consideration for others. I despise Leftism, and if I go to a restaurant for dinner, I am within my rights to say dang near anything I want to say, as long as I am not using profanity or raising my voice. But in general, though I abhor Leftism, I choose not discuss my disdain for it within earshot of other diners.

And I do that simply out of consideration for people I don’t know. Why should I ruin their meal?

It is within my rights to mow my lawn at 8:00 AM in the morning. But I don’t, because I recognize that even though I am up early and ready to go, some people might want to sleep in a little longer on a Saturday and Sunday morning.

What is wrong with a woman thinking: “I can take out my entire breast here to breastfeed my baby, but I will be discreet and just reveal enough for the baby to get what it needs without having to expose my entire chest, because I know that even though it is a natural function, some people are uncomfortable with it.”

Wrong! Leave if you do not like the fact that she is within her rights.

This isn't about rights, it's about control and forcing your viewpoint upon others.

A simple question, is this a public act or a private act?

breast pumps are time consuming and pretty silly when you think about it..

Silly me...I thought breast pumps were for working mothers when their child wasn't present.

She has the LEGAL right, it's true. And I have the legal right to tell her she's a crass exhibitionist who lacks the modesty of a Ubangi tribeswoman.

And everybody else in the restaurant has the same right.

It's not asking too much for her to either go to a nursing station or to cover up.

Do tell! Well, at least your using the term “savant” indicates you know how thin your assessment of me is.

I’d ask for you to validate your assertion about modesty with a citation of some sort, but I think you’d have an easier time finding “distinction without difference,” if you have to look something up. Perhaps you should also look up “functional illiterate,” for your own edification.

I think its guilt....female breasts are, always have been, and always will be biologically for one reason only....to feed their babies..and that is not what men want to hear or acknowledge because its all about them apparently, not the children...

Somehow, I think that if women explained that before marriage (along with your accompanying attitude) I think there would be significantly fewer marriages.

The music volume at Texas Roadhouse is so loud I’m surprised she even understood what the waiter or their manager was trying to tell her.

I was there one night and everybody was shouting at each other and nobody understood the word anybody else was saying... So that’s it for me - Texas Roadhouse is way too loud. It borders on hearing damage if doesn’t cross the hearing damage threshold all together.

...and why would anybody expose a child to that level of volume?

Especially pregnant and nursing mothers today who want everyone to pay attention to their nudity while pregnant and their boobs after while they breast feed.

Pregnancy, childbirth and parenthood are profoundly life changing events.

So many parents (esp mothers) seem to think they're the first to have experienced it.

I was estranged from that sister for about 8 years because of her actions during my mother’s terminal illness. My sister lived in Vermont, and occasionally visited, but when my mother was struggling with cancer, she got one of the worst cases of shingles on top of it that even the medical staff had ever seen...covering nearly 2/3 her entire back and one shoulder. It was horrible. We could not care for her, and had to fight to have her admitted to a rehab where they could give her the appropriate care that we couldn’t.

We had to work damn hard to get insurance to cover it, too, but through a lot of intensive work, we did.

My sister came down, and she visited my mother unbeknownst to the rest of us and took her out of the rehab without even talking to us. When she asked why we were so angry about it, I told her bluntly, which is not my normal style. She split our family in two, and none of us talked to her or she to us for that eight year period. She didn’t come to my mother’s funeral.

I tried with no success to get in touch with her a few years back, then finally just took it on myself to drive the four hours to where she lived, even though I didn’t have her address. I only knew the town, so I went to the general store in the town and asked if anyone knew her and her husband, and where they lived, and drove out there.

We had a reconciliation, and the fact was, she had never intended the estrangement to go on for so long, but when she cooled off, life got in the way, and months turned into years. Anyway, I had a nice visit with her, but have been unable to convince my brothers to go see her. For many reasons, the grudge runs deep in them and they aren’t interested.

I have found that holding a grudge like that is more toxic than the grudge itself, but people gotta figure that out on their own.

I tell you all this, because it says something about my sister. I mean, any woman who can deliver her baby in a rough shack in a northern Vermont winter with no electricity, water, or heat beyond a fire, without any medical help or assistance, well, at the very least, they have guts if not much sense.

So when I think back to my sister raising her fist in the air and shouting that, I do indeed roll my eyes, even if I am laughing at the ridiculousness of it inside!
