Now’s here’s a fun thread. Thanks!
I only wish that the red squirrels would fatten up for the winter as much as the gray squirrels, then they would no longer fit into the “squirrel proof” cages on the feeders.
The sunflower feeder with the cage is their favorite. They climb right on in (whoever gets there first and/or can hold the territory), and then nestle in for full day at the Golden Corral. They don’t pay me any mind either. Just no shame, lol.
Gotta love ‘em; life is short.

If it’s a male squirrel he will eventually turn on her or a family member.

Hi.
I used to hunt a lot. Two times I fell asleep. Once in a stand (yes, I was strapped in). Once on the ground.
I woke up both times looking at a squirrel face to face. (Happened with a bird too).
Scared both of us.

When I was a boy, we had a female squirrel who lived in a nail keg my father had attached to an oak tree in the back yard. She was quite tame and would eat nuts while perched on our shoulders or knees. My dad named her “Ol’ Bess”, which seemed appropriate. She raised a number of little ones in that nail keg but none of her offspring were as tame as she was. If we didn’t respond to her requests for food, she would jump on the window screen and make sure we saw her.

Never raised a squirrel but have raised several baby bunnies, one of my childhood dogs would catch them but had a “soft mouth” so he didn’t kill them or really even injure them. So, we’d nurse them and try to let them go back into the wild when they were capable. One wouldn’t go, remained as a pet, really funny little guy, we loved him. He stayed with us for several years, as a housekept. Used a litterbox. We went away for a weekend, left plenty of food and water for him, but he had died when we got home. We don’t know what happened. Buried him on the edge of the backyard alongside several pet dogs.

Had to pause on part of the title.
