Police have named the man who died at a Hobart beach from a suspected stingray puncture wound, while an expert in the marine species has urged calm despite increased numbers of the animals in Tasmanian waters.

Nicolas Ricketts, 42, died from cardiac arrest on Saturday shortly after he sustained the injury to his lower abdomen, believed to have been inflicted by a stingray, while swimming at Lauderdale, east of Hobart.

Friends and family of Mr Ricketts, known widely as "Ned" who worked as a plumber and had served with the Australian Navy, gathered at the spot where he died yesterday.

The beach, about 13 kilometres east of Hobart, is a popular spot for swimmers but is also a known spot for stingrays and skates.

Director of CSIRO's Australian National Fish Collection Dr Peter Last specialises in shark, skate and stingray research, and said the death was extremely rare for Tasmania.

...

the sting was there to protect the species against predators, such as sharks.

Could be 1 in 60,000,000 but if you are the “1” the odds are irrelevant.

Steve Irwin. He was fun.

His daughter and widow have a new show on Animal Planet.

There was a spot near Long Beach, Cal, that we called ‘Ray Bay’ that was infested with them. I believe they dragged it with nets to clear them out or at least reduce their numbers. We were told to shuffle our feet to avoid stepping on them—which they tended to resent. That said, the California rays were much less venomous than the ones in Australia—where everything tries to kill you.

“His daughter and widow have a new show on Animal Planet.”

Yeah, it’s about the zoo Steve started. Pretty decent show but it ain’t The Crocodile Hunter.
The first show his boy did his first solo croc feeding.

I’d rather watch old Crocodile Hunter episodes. I remember watching the public funeral for Steve, and his daughter’s eulogy. So sad .

I’m with you.
Steve’s absolute joy and happiness really shone through. He loved it all, didn’t matter if it was a spider, snake or croc.

They had a month of Best of The Crocodile Hunter before the premier of the new show. His wife and best friend did some commentary. It was nice.

He was such a sweet fellow. I loved his enthusiasm and humor. He’d say how deadly some snake was and then get as close as possible. Smiling the whole time.
