Right after JFK was confirmed dead, there was a lot of talk about ‘will we be invaded by the Russians? Will Cuba send a few bombs into Florida to get even for the Bay of Pigs attempted invasion by this president? Of course, as First Grader, I didn’t know what Bay of Pigs really meant back then. I thought they were talking about farms.
The recording of Chet Huntley, Bill Ryan and Frank McGee still sends chills up my spine 55 years later. It is on YouTube.
And all the pundits just *knew* it had to be a “right-winger” that killed JFK.

I was 23 and in the Air Force at the time. I was/am a rock ribbed conservative/libertarian/republican and no fan of JFK but trust me an incident like this will rattle your cage for a long time. Whole nation came together...for the moment. But damned if the democrats didn’t immediately blame conservative (then) Dallas for it.
