A farmer died after his dog knocked over a lever in his forklift truck, causing it to move forward and push him against a gate, causing fatal injuries, an inquest heard on Friday.

Derek Mead was constructing a rock garden at his residence in Hewish, near Weston-super Mare, in Somerset, England, on June 4, 2017, the BBC reported.

The 70-year-old farmer left his furry friend, a Jack Russell terrier, inside the machine as it was running but left it in neutral as he went to open the gate leading to his land, the Evening Standard reported. The dog was believed to have knocked the lever, sending the forklift forward

Clever!

Don’t know how it happens, but often these serious threads move from our own experiences to light hearted humor.

This.^^^^^ A most difficult thing is not nagging my spouse about this. Over 70 is too hot, especially for a large, black lab and spouse does not comply.

I had a dog that would sleep on the car seat, until he got too warm. Then, he’d curl up on the floorboard, by the pedals. One day I forgot the parking brake. He laid against the clutch, and the car rolled out to the middle of the road. Glad it was a dead end street.

If that unfortunate man had lived here the government would of issued a citation to his next of kin for letting the dog “operate” the forklift without certification!

Well see that right there? That would never happen if he had cats instead of dogs.
A cat would NEVER push any type of lever....that's not related to food input.

The cat taunted the dog, who in turn put the machine into gear. The perfect feline crime.

A kitten being kept by a fellow I know got the best of a couple of dogs who liked to catch rabbits and bring them to their owner. The kitten said nyah nyah to the dogs and one of them caught the kitten and rushed it, squealing, to their owner, who was in a high dudgeon over the kitten-napping. Result: dogs will never run loose again. Kitten was smirking to its siblings and cousins.

My dog locked me out of my Silverado pick up. So, I learned to leave a window down or take the keys with me, even just to open a gate or get gas.

He also stood on the window button in my wife's Denali and closed it on his neck and now we have to remember to keep the child locks on when he's in the back seat.

There are also stories about dogs shooting their owners. Got to be careful with Fido

“I told you I wanted Kibbles and Bits!”

I had this dog and a couple of cats years ago and the dog was always sneaking into the cat’s bowl of “Thrive” dried cat food, to the point that all that dog would ever eat was “Thrive.” Which made it easy cuz I only had had to buy one kind of food. That dog loved his “Thrive.”

Farm accidents are awful but fortunately on the decline over this past century due to enhancements in safety features on farm equipment.

My step-mother was from Canada. Her father was a farmer in Chatham Ontario and he lost a leg in a farming accident.

My own mother's grandfather was from Canada who moved to Michigan and worked for the rail road in northern Michigan during the logging industry. According to family records, he lost his leg when he was crushed between two railroad cars and actually had his leg amputated on their kitchen table. He died several years later due to continued complications...........Life was really tough back then.

“I brought along The Little Dog because he likes to listen to the oldies radio channel.”

That’s a good one... I had a dog that “loved” The Glenn Miller song “Pennsylvania 6-5000” and when the song stopped for a second and the whole band shouted “Pennsylvania 6-5000” that dog would start barking and running around the house trying to figure out who was in the house yelling Pennsylvania 6-5000.”

So naturally, whenever I needed a chuckle I would put on that Glenn Miller song on the stereo and watch my dog go to town.
