I just googled because I wanted to know the same thing. Apparently it is pronounced “tijis”, as in litigious. And is short for Matthew. Don’t ask me how.

Even if it were spelled "Thijis", which it is not, it would be short for "Matthias", and pronounced "ma-TY-iss." But it is "Tijs", and pronounced "TY-iss."
