I lived less than 3 blocks from “Northridge’ when the 71 quake hit.
I was very lucky. I had little damage. My house was situated east-west.
Friend who had a north-south house got severe damage. EVERY single ting in the kitchen cupboards came out & was smashed. The swinging front door & the sliding back door were both locked. The quake opened both of them, and then gyrated the water in the swimming pool & sent it thru his house. In the slider, out the front door.
The damages caused by that quake are still not repaired. Endless fighting over insurance, etc.
The following winter I was riding on Amtrak from Southern California to Illinois (the old Santa Fe route). There was an elderly lady on the train who had decided to leave LA because of the earthquakes and was headed to Fort Worth. Apparently she had not contacted anyone there, but her wedding had been in Fort Worth in 1911 and there had been a lot of people at the wedding, so she was sure she would find someone she knew.
Ah, for a simpler time.
