My grandma once talked about how the local lake used to be a pasture. She said that an earthquake in Alaska created the lake. I wasn’t sure if I should believe her or not until I heard some classmates talking about watching out for fence posts while waterskiing during dry summers.

I just didn’t realize it had happened as recently as 1964. My mom graduated a few years later and that’s where she and her friends went waterskiing. A dramatic change in the landscape.

There’s actually a lot of scholarly hydrology writing about the 1964 Alaska earthquake’s effect on water tables in the Lower 48, including huge changes in Florida!
