If George H W Bush hadn’t been picked up by a Navy submarine off the island of Chi Chi Jima he wouldn’t have survived the war. None of the other US personnel capture on that island did. Read The book “Fly Boys” a follow on to “Flags of Our Fathers”. It’s a grim read but so was the book about Iwo Jima. What we gave up to have an airfield for wounded bombers bombing Japan is pretty sobering. H W was lucky and I’m sure he knew it.
