Part 1 of a three part documentary on life in the most prestigious regiment in the British Army, the Grenadier Guards. At any given time about half the regiment is on deployment, often to combat zones, while the other half mount guard at the various royal residences with the other Household Guards regiments. In his six voulume “History of WWII”, Churchill mentions that they went to great trouble and expense to transport a number of tanks to North Africa. They used flat bed trucks to save wear on the tank treads.
The first battle they were in, their crews ran out of gas and abandoned them in the desert. The Guards regiment came along and found them, scrounged up fuel and saved them.
Besides the Grenadier Gaurds, the Royal Scots Guards, the Coldstream Guards, and the Welsh Guards periodically rotate the the palace guard. You can tell each regiment by the way the buttons are gruped on their tunics.
Thanks, I think Churchill just referred to them as “The Guards”, I guess thinking people would know what that meant. I had thought he was referring to the Coldstream Guards but I didn’t know there were all that many Guards outfits.
