Nurses and doctors in Irish hospitals have been urged not to call patients love or dear, the HSE has said.
Other pet names, such as girls, lads, or boys, should also not be used by medical staff on wards, under new recommendations from the health executive to ensure staff in hospitals speak in a way that is person-centered.
Healthcare workers in hospitals have been further instructed to avoid referring to patients by their bed number, diagnosis or affected body area.
Do we talk about feeding people instead of assisting with meals, or refer to someone coming back from theater as the hip/the hernia/knee etc? the HSE advice states. This is a powerful exercise to help raise awareness of how depersonalising some commonly used language can be.
The recommendations, issued in a report responding to a national patient experience survey, prompted some to lament the passing of how are you feeling, love? and other informal expressions.
Michael OKeefe, a consultant ophthalmologist at the Mater hospital in Dublin, said the recommendations were political correctness gone mad at a time of an acute hospital bed shortage and soaring waiting lists for operations.

“I’m not programmed to respond it that area”
Téigh fuck duit féin
Yes, let’s take humanity out of personal interaction. What more can be said.
Well den, how about ‘’fecking ejit’’? Eh? Can we call somebody a ‘’fecking ejit’’?
As another person that has been in the medical field for 40 + years, it is considered unprofessional to call someone dear or honey. While some do appreciate and may even prefer it, most do not. You start by address people by their name and title and if they tell you to call them Barbara, or Sue or some nickname, then you have their permission, and then address them in the way that they wish to be addressed. But if you aren’t given that permission then you are imposing a pet name on someone that may consider it derogatory. I have heard nurses call their patients, “Honey”, “Grandma”. “Sweetie”, etc. Once the nurse leaves the room, the patient growls about it.
Its clear they want more patients to die off in from their illnesses and injuries.
Putting thi rule in place is proof positive. THEY KNOW ABOUT THE STUDIES. If I do, they sure as hell do.
They want more folks to die off. Keeps socialized medical care costs down. More money for abortion and muslim scum immigrants.
Leftists doing their best to remove all simple pleasures from life...
“By the way, now that we legalized abortion, don’t be calling them dang fetuses babies no more!”
I remember years ago going to a diner with a female friend and the waitress called her "honey". When the waitress walked away, she gave a death stare and started telling me how she hated when a stranger would use a familiar "pet" name with her just because she was female.
All I could think was "I'm male and I get called 'honey' and the like all the time by waitresses and clerks and stuff. It's just the way some women interact with others. Doesn't bother me a bit and I don't read anything into it other than it's friendly banter, In fact, I think it's pleasant". But I didn't want to become part of the problem in her mind so I kept all that to myself.
I still treat them....the way I was raised to treat them.
It seems to make it a colder and less personal world, rather than being “person centered”. It’s the opposite.
Guess they would not tolerate this either (from TOS episode “Tomorrow is Yesterday”)
