The San Francisco-based company said families paid about $2,500 to have a sample of their loved ones ashes placed aboard the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
Traveling into space will be the remains of military veterans and aerospace enthusiasts, alongside those whose families were looking to celebrate a loved one within the poetry of the starry sky, Elysium Space said in an emailed statement.
James ashes and the others were packed into a 4-inch square satellite called a cubesat, Elysium Space Founder and CEO Thomas Civeit explained to CNN. Families will be able to track the spacecraft in real-time through an app as it orbits the earth for about four years before it falls back to Earth, according to Civeit.
The launch is part of a rideshare mission organized by Spaceflight. The company said it purchased the rocket to accommodate clients, which range from schools to commercial businesses to government entities and international organizations. Sixty-four small satellites from 34 different organizations will be aboard, Spaceflight said.

I thought Musk was busy digging or pretending to dig huge underground tunnels in Los Angeles...
Where is all the equipment to do this, btw? Huge undertaking.
This was the plot of the end of the black comedy ‘The Loved One’, Terry Southern’s screenwriter followup to Dr. Strangelove...
Will they still be voting Democrat by absentee ballot?
A two mile test tunnel is complete, but local residents have killed any more activity using that tunnel. It would have been opened on the tenth of this month.
Now they’ll start on operational tunnels in LA, Chicago and possibly NYC to DC.
So they packed “everyone” into a four inch cube. What if your ashes are next to a liberal? Will the cube eventually explode in space?
Wow... that is an enormous amount of dirt and tunnelling machinery that somehow no one has seen in the news...
There have been rumors of tunnels beneath LA for years... is Musk just trying to bring the existing tunnels out of the closet so to speak?
Two miles of a “test tunnel”.
In millions upon millions of cubit feet of dirt and huge machinery, that is something that, in itself, would take decades of permits, traffic easements and homeowner consent... and probably 250 billion dollars. How did that happen in Los Angeles overnight?
LOL. Musk. LOL.
I used to tell friends that when I die I wanted to be shot into the sun. That way I could warm my loved ones... and give skin cancer to my enemies :-p
I want my ashes put to good use, like mixed in with the cat litter.
The images, videos, and news stories are on the Internet. If you want to pretend they don’t exist, that’s your choice.
Interesting. Have seen no coverage at all except some homeowner protest.

You mean this photo in the above link, “the first photo ever taken” of the tunnel by Musk?
The first photo in that article was taken in Nevada.
There is a parking lot “hole” filled with muddy water in this article, but this hole is clearly not large enough for anything near the size of a tunnel bore.
Yep... can’t find photos. Is Musk pulling a fast one because the sheep are asleep?
Cubesats orbit for a while, the article said four years, then the gravitational pull of the earth sucks them back into the atmosphere where they burn up on reentry.
For the right amount of money, anyone can send a cubesat into orbit. Some students in the Astronautical Engineering program my son just graduated from have been working on a cubesat program for a couple years as a proof of concept project. I think it goes up next year.

Sorry I didn’t pay attention to all that spacezx Musk stuff... is this purported to be a “real” photo of someone flying a convertible in space?
OMG, I honestly wasn’t paying attention.
LOL but what an interesting name... “Balrog”.
Baal, Bal or Bel is an ancient Biblical term.
Sorry for the double post, but have you seen video of Musk boring machine or the 100 city blocks-size mountains of excavated dirt that would have to have been removed by Musk in newscasts,
or are you just assuming?
