lived in cold climate and my parents thought nothing about me having to walk to school in the cold but I was not 10 years old I was 13-14 years old... I question the wisdom of sending a kid out that far at a young age. the cold part is no big deal if the kid is bundled up properly.

Walked just over a mile in second grade to and from school in Detroit, after begging my parents to let me do it - with friends who were doing it.
Fondly remember the fun we had...
