Roger Waters' Plea Prompts Pink Floyd Tribute Band to Cancel Its Gigs in Israel
Sputnik ^ | Dec. 9, 2018 | Staff

Last month, a Jewish organisation in Argentina launched a petition urging people across the region to boycott Roger Waters concerts and calling the former Pink Floyd leader "one of the great anti-Semites of our time".

Three gigs by UK Pink Floyd Experience, a tribute band dedicated to covering the music of the British rockers, have been cancelled after former lead singer of Pink Floyd Roger Waters urged the musicians not to perform in Israel "in the name of everything human".

In a message published on his Facebook page, Waters said, in particular, that he is "aghast to see" that UK Pink Floyd Experience plans to perform in Tel Aviv, Haifa and Beersheba in early January.

He claimed that singing his songs "in front of segregated audiences in Israel […] would be an act of unconscionable malice and disrespect".

Shortly after Waters sent his message, the tribute band announced the cancellation of the concerts on its Facebook account, which was then deleted due to a wave of online attacks.

EGOeast, the local production company, for its part expressed hope that its efforts "over the past 24 hours will bear fruit and the [UK Pink Floyd Experience] shows will be held as planned". A spokesperson for the tribute band did not comment on the situation.

In 2017, thousands of fans attended UK Pink Floyd Experience's concerts in the Israeli cities of Tel Aviv, Haifa and Beersheba and heaped praise on the performance.

In mid-September, Jewish institutions in Argentina mounted a Change.org petition against Waters after he took part in a Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement event ahead of his concert in Buenos Aires.

The rock legend appeared on a BDS-organised program, called "A World Without Wall", where he urged "our local governments to pressure Israel, in favour of the human rights of the Palestinians".

The Argentina Zionist Organisation was quick to respond with the petition calling for the boycott of Waters concerts and slamming him as "one of the great anti-Semites of our time".

"Waters advocates human rights and artistic freedom while demonising, delegitimising and applying a double standard to advance his anti-Semitic political agenda. We, Latin Americans, say to Roger Waters – we wish you weren't here!" the petition reads, in a reference to the Pink Floyd hit song "Wish You Were Here".

In Shanghai back in 2005, Water's floated a pig with "Bush" written on it's ass.

I got up and walked out.

For me it was one of the most "just damn" moments when an artist you like becomes unwatchable or unlistenable ever again.

When they made this guy they forgot to put in the quit.

I’ve always wondered why I didn’t own any Pink Floyd albums. I guess their “music” sucks, IMHO.

I never could stand him. His ego was responsible for the breakup of the band. Over the years I have come to truly detest Waters. There’s something wrong in the head with him.

When one compiles a list of the world’s biggest a-holes Waters certainly makes the list.

I enjoyed Pink Floyd back in the day, when I was a pre-teen and teenager, DSOTM was the number #1 album on the charts, and no one had to hear Roger Waters babbling about grown-up matters he doesn't understand. I even got to see them at one of Bill Graham's Day On The Green concerts back in 1977.

Then "The Wall" then came along - it was effectively a Waters solo album, masquerading as a Pink Floyd album. It featured song after song of Waters droning on in his nasal tones about his daddy issues and what not (the world would be a better place if guys like Waters and Pete Townshend understood that they are not there to sing). It effectively killed my interest in the band. This spares me the annoyance of supporting an artist who I find to be a world-class jackass and a hypocrite.

“Then “The Wall” then came along.”

Exactly. That was the end for me as well. I just never got on board with the whole “concept album” thing.

When I think of Pink Floyd I don’t think of waters but of David Gilmour. The lyrics were (mostly) waters, but the sound that makes PF PF is Gilmour.

Roger waters is a loon. They’re all loons.

Waters treated Richard Wright like crap.

Thank God Gilmour had Wright in his band before he passed away.

I still listen to Pink Floyd, and got to see them only once and that was after Waters had left the band. They played a lot of music from The Wall and I had to ask myself why I was enjoying it at the concert but found the album unlistenable. And it was because it got rid of all the Waters’ whining between songs. Also, Gilmour was always the better musician and was more interested in the music rather than the message.

Agree about Gilmour the musician. Another anecdote - my mother-in-law got us tickets to a concert where the Florida Symphony Orchestra combined with a Pink Floyd tribute band to do an orchestral riff on Pink Floyd songs. What I found interesting was how much better the songs which were written by Gilmour translated to that format as opposed to the Waters tunes.

Plus, Roger Waters is an ass. :-)

Speaking of Gilmour.

This is one of the most criminally underrated Floyd songs.

Wots Uh The Deal? (Funny title, but I absolutely love this song)

Glad to see he still plays it live in his concerts.

Yes indeed. Because 'there is no body "in there"'!
