bad taste and I understand the firing but criminal charges very Orwellian and scary to think that the state of California believe it has the authority to do this...

Poor taste is now a crime. Interestingly, it appears to have been criminalized without the trouble of actually passing a law. The police are able to initiate criminal prosecutions based on public sentiment. It’s a brave new world. ( Not really but we are leaning in that direction.)

I suppose Mueller will prosecute this, too. He has a lot of experience at making up laws, intimidating the innocent, indicting ham sandwiches, and getting people to plead guilty to non-crimes.
