...In 1953, Eartha Kitt recorded Santa Baby, a song that is a testament to the more capitalist tendencies the season can evoke. Over the course of a dozen sultry stanzas, Kitt asked for the sorts of gifts that any American could imagine: nice cars, luxurious homes and a few blank checks. Talk about true love.
So lets figure out just how much fulfilling her Christmas wish list would cost.
Santa baby, slip a sable under the tree for me . . .
Sable: $88,000
So a sable is a small weasel-like animal, as you may know, that mostly lives in Russia. Kitt is not requesting a pet. She wants its fur, fashioned into a coat.
Well start by noting that, in this analysis, we are not going to skimp. You could probably roll up to the Goodwill in Beverly Hills and stumble across a weathered sable that you could take home for $100 or so. But the point of this exercise is extravagance.
Sable coats are some of the most expensive furs you can buy especially, we are told, when they come from elusive wild sables in Siberias Barguzin region, which can run into the six figures. The most expensive sable we found was a Russian sable short coat from Neiman Marcus, which will set you back $88,000...

I’ve always hated that song...but I didn’t want it banned.
It was subtle compared to today’s standards in Pop.
A deed to a platinum mine.. sure. why not.
Eartha Kitt - “Santa Baby”:
Santa baby, just slip a sable under the tree
For me
Been an awful good girl
Santa baby, so hurry down the chimney tonight
Santa baby, a 54 convertible too
Light blue
I’ll wait up for you dear
Santa baby, so hurry down the chimney tonight
Think of all the fun I’ve missed
Think of all the fellas that I haven’t kissed
Next year I could be just as good
If you’ll check off my Christmas list
Santa baby, I wanna yacht
And really that’s not a lot
Been an angel all year
Santa baby, so hurry down the chimney tonight
Santa honey, one little thing I really need
The deed
To a platinum mine
Santa baby, so hurry down the chimney tonight
Santa cutie, and fill my stocking with a duplex
And checks
Sign your ‘X’ on the line
Santa cutie, and hurry down the chimney tonight
Come and trim my Christmas tree
With some decorations bought at Tiffany’s
I really do believe in you
Let’s see if you believe in me
Santa baby, forgot to mention one little thing
A ring
I don’t mean on the phone
Santa baby, so hurry down the chimney tonight
Hurry down the chimney tonight
Hurry, tonight
I’ve always liked Eartha Kitt, even though the lyrics are not what I want in a Christmas song.
Here is a performance by Julie London from 1961. It pairs well with the Eartha Kitt number.
I never cared for Eartha Kitt after she insulted the wife of the President of the USA, back around 1968.
But dog gone, she is a good singer although I prefer Dinah Washington.
Really liked that song... I really liked her when she was about to kick Arnold’s ass...
It is not politically correct today, but it is stupidly too much not politically correct because our younger generations take the lyrics far too seriously, and in error think earlier generations took it way more seriosly than they ever really did. The whole lyric is like a sly joke sung with a beautiful and sultry wink and nod; as if Ms Kitt is singing it to a “sugar daddy” she calls “Santa Baby”.
Listenting to Earth was as good as watching Marilyn.
She aged well, too.
Eartha Kitt was hands down, the best catwoman. She owned that role.
Julie Newmar was the best Cat Woman, but Eartha had a sexier voice.
On the other hand, Julie London had a voice that was sexier still, and she mostly played in westerns until her television stint on Emergency.
Maybe not good Christmas lyrics but they can also be seen as a commentary on how Christmas was being commercialized even then - during the post-war consumerism boom....brought memories of Joplin singing “Oh Lord won’t you buy me....”....might have to play some of her tunes for old times sake...
Michael Buble sings a good version of this, Santa Buddy.
Speaking of Julie London
All the Best album Julie London does Jazz and Pop:-)
