Not a picture from the story, but from the slot jockeys I've seen, a likely depiction of the winner.

I wandered through the slot machine room at an “Indian” casino in Niagara Falls ... Most of the players looked like zombies, many with an inch of ash on their cigarettes ...

How long before the casino reports the machine wasn’t calibrated correctly and wasn’t scheduled to pay out?

Yea, and how many people shove $1,000 in those machines and go home without a penny?

The devil always shows us the 1/1,000,000 that gets lucky. It’s like the 1 in a million guy that lives to 100 and says he owes his longevity to wine, whisky and cigereets.

Sin is always packaged in a pretty wrapper.

Nice visual and accurate I would say. I am a reformed smoker and therefore am allergic to it, so I won’t go in them anyway.

What does a spin on these one-armed bandits cost?

No mention of how much a spin costs. The modern media would not bother to figure in expenses and come up with the real winnings. Of course the Tax man will get half of it as well.

Anywhere from 1 cent to 5 dollars. And up for the really high rollers. Depends on which machine you choose. My wife and I used to stick with the quarter slots.

Interesting. I count spins when I play slots and many times write down those results. 960? I’ve not taken it out that far. Correlations? Nothing to speak of...and I’m very happy winning $10 - $20. I have no problem leaving with a tiny profit. Escapism, entertainment & data accumulation.

I know a sure fire way to make big money on slot machines.

Own them.

I think I've seen her before! Actually you are spot on, the average "slot junkie" looks similar to that. I've seen them playing two machines at once. Just smoking away and hitting the buttons over and over again like mice in a science experiment. I always wondered what the fun was in that.

Slot machines are a guilty pleasure of mine but I like to draw the experience out. I play just one machine at a time and take my time between spins. Typically I throw in a $100 bill. If I get down more than $20 on a machine, I cash out, add a $20 and go find another machine to put $100 in.

Consequently, if I hit on one and go at least $20 over my initial $100, I cash out, move on to another machine and repeat the cycle. That way, you are walking away a winner at least a few times during the day. If I win an especially large jackpot (over $100), I'll reward myself with a drink at the bar or maybe even dinner. Psychologically that helps. But overall, you lose on the slots over the long run.

My bankroll is $500 a day. If I go through that, I'm done for the day no matter what. But that rarely happens. I usually have at least $200-300 left when I quit for the day. Then next day I start with a fresh $500.

I do this maybe once every two or three years - a week in Vegas with $2500 or so to burn. Cheaper than what I used to spend with the kids at Disneyland anyway.

Biggest jackpot I won on a slot was $3,400. This was a nickel machine. Felt nice. This was in Vegas and my wife and I had a very expensive dinner and we went to the Penn & Teller show afterwards.

Play a lot of Blackjack too. Usually at $15 hand. If you play a fair game (blackjack pays 3 to 2 - NEVER play 6 to 5) and use basic strategy, you never lose big. If you get $100 or so over your initial outlay WALK AWAY.

“My wife and I used to stick with the quarter slots.”

Ever hit a payoff that was a really nice surprise? Do you know the relative top payoff amounts from the different cost slots?

Once in Carson City she got $85 on her quarter - pretty quickly, too. We're smart players and high-tailed it out of there; the trick is to not stay after a win. We spent the winnings on a nice dinner.

Professional gamblers avoid slot machines because the chance of winning your money back is low. Furthermore, no matter how high the jackpot gets, slot machines aren’t required to pay out. A larger jackpot doesn’t give you a better chance of winning.

Because the machines use random number generators to decide outcomes, your odds won’t ever change no matter what time of day you play.

That’s a lot of times having to hear “Wheel. Of. Fortune” shouted over and over.
