California transformed its justice system. But now crime is up, and critics want rollbacks
The Los Angeles Times ^ | 12/20/2018 | ABBIE VANSICKLE and MANUEL VILLA

Over the last decade, California has led the nation in reducing its prison population.

The state has shortened sentences and diverted some offenders to the counties for incarceration and supervision, transforming California’s criminal justice system into what supporters hope will become a humane model around the country.

But amid the changes, crime has increased in recent years, sparking debate about the causes and giving ammunition to those leading a new effort to roll back some of the reforms.

An analysis by the Marshall Project and the Los Angeles Times found that California’s crime rates remain near historic lows, but overall crime spiked in both 2012 and 2015, the years that immediately followed two major statewide measures aimed at decreasing the number of people in prison. Those jumps were mainly driven by increases in property crimes, particularly thefts from motor vehicles.

Any time you read about “more humane prisons” or “prison reform” or “ending the school to prison pipeline,” it means one thing only: more criminals on the streets committing crimes. Always, without fail.

Look at Michigan, Washington, California, New Jersey, New York, Oregon..... See a pattern here? As long as mentally diseased rats control the state, all hell will break loose.

If they would build prison they don’t want to go back to maybe some would reform. 6X8 cell, peanut butter sandwiches 3 times a day. Period.

Jailing these people is probably the humane thing to do, for everybody.

California is for

1. Illegals
2. Homeless
3. Convicts / criminals
4. Extremely rich people

In that order. What could go wrong?

Homeless is one of my pet peeves, they give them taxpayer money to not try to stop being homeless meanwhile the gov workers make millions in taxpayer money to get full heathcare and some make over 200k a year.

Every time some news surfaces about a real problem in a particular location, I noticed some well-known dims shows up to make a major speech about:

GLOBAL WARMING.

WTH is that all about. For instance, that inconsequential freak in California, Jerry Brown.

Well, when you reclassify all crimes as misdemeanors or not crimes at all, your crime statistics shoot to zero.

With the prison reform bill just passed by congress and signed by Trump, soon the whole country will experience more vibrancy from the ex-inmate “community”.

That’s exactly what is happening in Philadelphia. The Soros DA was praised in GQ magazine for reducing crime by eliminating cash bail and making “petty” crimes not crimes. In the story, this guy called Sessions a racist who probably wanted to bring back lynching. A few days later the Philly paper had an article about the steep increase in murder and how old ladies are afraid to leave their homes. Of course the paper blamed the increase on poverty, etc. and called for more studies and more government programs for blighted areas. All of this is done in an attempt to disguise the fact that one group commits the most crime.

The door from prisons to the outside is just faster. Plus, they just don’t even write up half the crimes so the charts will show crime is down according to Sacramento. Downward spiral of deceit and crime.

#9. You left out the INSANE, which is most of the Democrats, all their Democrat/leftist/Marxist politicians, some chiefs of police/sheriffs, a lot of judges, and almost every Democrat member of Congress.

the stats are not real in California . part of the reform was taking a lot of class 3 felonies and recategorizing them as misdemeanors. in a lot of counties the district attorney won’t prosecute low level theft crimes because the county has to house a prisoner if there is jail time and those that are given fines by the court can claim indigency and not pay at all....thank you Governor Moon beam Brown and the demacrat party for this mess.

only in californicate would anyone be surprised that prematurely releasing criminals from jail would increase crime.
