Microsoft starts accepting beta testers for the new Edge

Microsoft is currently working on building a new browser after its EdgeHTML experiment failed, so now the company is transitioning to Chromium for an approach that just can’t go wrong.

The software giant has started receiving beta testers for the new browser, as it’s now likely finalizing the preview build due in early 2019.

What’s important to know is that registering today doesn’t provide you with a download link, but only adds your name to the list of beta testers that will receive the preview build of the new Microsoft Edge when it launches sometime next year.

Microsoft clearly wants to take the development stage of the new browser seriously, so it’s hoping that beta testers can help it improve the application significantly before pushing the go-ahead button.Preview expected in early 2019

There’s no ETA as to when the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge is expected to be finalized, but it should happen sometime next year. The browser could be offered in the fall of 2019 Windows 10 feature update.

Microsoft says that by moving to Chromium, the company can “make the web a better place for everyone,” as it’ll contribute to the project and invest in open source.

“We announced that we will adopt the Chromium open source project in the development of Microsoft Edge on the desktop to create better web compatibility for our customers, and less fragmentation of the web for all web developers,” the company says.

“We’ve meaningfully increased our open source participation and we’re determined to be good members of the OSS community. This project is an exciting next step and we're eager to learn from you.”

If you want to register for the Chromium Edge beta testing program, click here to enter your details. We’ll let you know when the first preview build becomes available for download for beta users.

For users with Windows 10, this sounds like an improvement over the original Edge browser, whose primary use was to download the Chrome browser.

Will it attract users away from Chrome? Anybody's guess. But it may be worth checking out...

Chromium is Google. Google is Evil.

None for me, please.

Chromium is open source, so there's at least a chance that any evil in the software itself can be identified and purged.

No such luck with the company itself, of course.

Was an Opera user from Opera’s start. They went to Chromium and I was a little miffed. They sold to a Chinese firm and I adiosed it. Tried out a bunch of different browsers ( mostly Chromium) Finally settled on Slimjet - chromium and a resource hog.

In between, I used EDGE. I thought it was quick, somewhat memory intensive and settings were simplistic. but I changed anyway. Until this article, I was thinking of changing back.

Question: What else is wrong with EDGE that I missed ?

May I suggest:

Check out the browser Vivaldi. It is developed by the Norwegian team that used to work on Opera, before Opera was sold to Chinese company Qihoo (which is why I don’t used it).

Vivaldi is very fast, not a memory hog, and has a TON of features. And, it is built on the free Chromium engine.

So far—a couple of weeks—I like it a lot better than Chrome, Firefox, or (no contest) Edge.

I’m sticking with Pale Moon - though I have to use Chrome for work because of some JavaScript idiosyncrasies.

Mostly, a lot of instability, compatibility issues, and misbegotten or missing features. It doesn't work with a lot of sites, it locks up, etc. It was a rough start, and it's never gotten to the point of being "ready for prime time". Microsoft gave up on it -- that says something right there.

If you want to see what sorts of things users complain about, you can start here: Google search for edge browser problems

Or if you don't want to use Google's search, use another...

Do you have to login to Google or Microsoft to use it ?

I actually use Edge for most of my browsing because I prefer the way that bookmarks are handled. On sites where it does not work properly I use Chrome which generally does have the best compatibility. I will definitely be trying out Edge with the Chrome innards.

You shouldn't have to, at least as far as I know...

I signed up... have been a beta tester for many other software projects over the years. It will be interesting to see how this hybrid works out.

Actually, I misspoke.

To -use- the browser, once it's available, you won't have to have an account. It's just a browser application.

But to register to try it out early, yeah, you have to let Microsoft know who you are.

I’ve learned that I am better off not subscribing to, or signing up for anything that comes from Microsoft. Especially their reward points or surveys.

cripes...sorry, didn’t mean for you to do my homework. I could have done that leg work. But thanks for the link.

I at first decided to not look at things that happened prior to 2018.
I hit a lot of different threads
I found a lot of user errors.
A lot of whacked systems, requiring resets of some form or another to make EDGE work.

I decided to take a look at MS Community - issues from 8/2015-12/19/2018

a lot of commentary but no help...a lot of user errors. Not so many complaint after 2017.

I looked at the dissertation in the article in this thread https://news.softpedia.com/news/microsoft-edge-s-migration-to-chromium-explained-524345.shtml

I have more web sites not render right in Slimjet and I use Edge to see ‘em.

I wonder if it’s about money. Labor intensive to do your own thing vs. using open source.

anyway, thanks again.

MS is doing what MS has done for 2 decades — forcing customers into stuff the customers neither want nor request.

If MS would find out — from the customers — what customers want and need, they might have better luck.

I have Win10 on a tablet. It is an irritant. I use the tablet most for online radio. Every couple of days, the tablet has to be restarted because a Win10 update hits a snag.

When I want to do any ‘real’ computing, I use my Win7 laptop or desktop.

MS Browsers have always sucked. Why anyone would use them when they are not forced to makes no sense to me
