Most of the North American tribes practiced some form of cannibalism at various times. I love telling hippie wannabes that living with the earth also included eating the hearts of your enemies and decorating your home with their skulls and scalps.

I don’t know that its so much a cultural memory so much as the fact that he is one of the demigods grafted in as a saint. If you dig around a bit Im sure youll find articles about shrines and alters to him being built along Mexican highways for years and illegals in the US doing sacrifices.

Xipe Totec was the god of corn - the flaking, decaying skin was supposed to the represent the shoots of the growing maize coming up through the earth.

The best thing Conquistadors did was wiping out the Aztec culture.
It just isn’t dead enough.

I got in to a serious pissing match with one of my Grand Daughters Teachers over the poor oppressed Aztecs. I gave her both of these books and also gave my G-daughter copies which she also read.

Shut the teach real quick.

My belief is that Diaz took notes, and interviewed many old comrades over the intervening 30 years before he officially started writing the "Discovery and Conquest".

He was literate, well read, and took direct part in one of the most incredible military adventures of all time.

He took notes.
