What You Need to Know About Russia's New 2S42 “Lotos” Self-Propelled Artillery Gun
National Interest ^ | January 6, 2018 | Mark Episkopos

An image out of an arms manufacturer’s corporate calendar, posted earlier this week, offers a first glimpse at the finalized design of the Russian Air Force's new 2S42 “Lotos” self-propelled artillery gun.

The depiction comes from the official “Central Scientific - Research Institute for Precision Machine Engineering” (TsNIITochMash) Instagram profile, accompanied by a descriptive quote from its head artillery engineer Dmitry Melikhov. Lotos is shown on the August page, likely in recognition of August 2 as being national “Airborne Forces Day” and August 12 as national “Air Force Day” in Russia. The design closely resembles a previous scale model displayed at Russia’s “Army 2017” exhibition.

120mm and a short barrel.

You need a lot of them and they need to be close to their target.

From the article:

"Lotos can fire six to eight shots per minute at an effective range of up to 13 km, as compared with the 8.8 km of its Soviet 2S9 Nona predecessor."

So at 6 shots per minute, that's 10 seconds to reload.

I’m not sure what that mortar carrier in the picture you posted is, but it is not the S242.

M110s in the American inventory.
We got rid of them in favor of MLRS.
I was at the last live fire of 8’ guns in Germany at Graf.
An entire Corps worth of 8” guns lined up, dress right dress, firing a variety of patters for 8 hours.

You’re right. It was the image at the top of the National Interest article, but it appears to be a 2S4 “Tulip” 240mm self-propelled mortar.

I was at FOB Bastogne with the 101st 502 Air Mobile in the A Shau. We had 8 inch 175’s 155’s and 105’s. We were sending rounds 18 miles up the valley almost to the Laotian border.

Maybe it was the 152mm version. Still just another mobile arty piece to be tracked, targeted and destroyed.
