I use both Linux and Windows on a daily basis, as an RF/electronics design engineer who sometimes writes software for the systems I design. Our products run Linux, and are incredibly reliable, with uptimes in the YEARS. Our software build systems run on Linux, and I have Linux virtual machines running on Windows so I can do builds on my PC. Works very well.
Sorry but I’m going to have to disagree. It is now.
I was just noting that there appears to be a company selling a basic package that they can almost guarantee will work for a Computer Dummy.
Believe me, I've paid my hours dues in messing with Linux. I really like it, though.
Thanks for the heads-up on Tails, rockrr. :-)
That has been my experience too. When the choice is Win 10 or Linux Mint, it’s Mint hands down.
My main desktop is a Mac. I have a MBP, another desktop mac for a studio machine, a Windows all in one that I don’t much use but have for any Windows needs and will soon build another Windows machine to run as an audio slave in my studio. On top of that I have an older Dell desktop running FreeBSD as a server setup but am getting a couple of bare bones actual servers for production use. I’m still deciding whether to stick with BSD or go to Linux, probably CentOS. I want better integration with the Macs.
What is amazing about BSD/Linux is that I can take a bunch of older desktop machines — and I’m talking a decade and a half old — and turn them in to halfway decent production server machines for small businesses or organizations. The only reason I’m getting a couple of actual servers is that I have an empty rack I want to put them in and I want to add some cooling equipment. Plus easier HDD configs.
Linux Mint Cinnamon for the win (not Windows!).
Yep. :)
I always laugh when people reuse that old canard about Linux being free if you don’t value your time. The cumulative cost of the maintenance headaches of MS-windows far outstrips the time most folks would spend tinkering with a modern Linux distribution like Mint or Fedora. Dealing with JUST antivirus software and antimalware stuff alone puts that old canard to rest.
The biggest thing I didn’t like was all the times that Google told me more than one way to solve whatever issue came up, and I couldn’t tell which was the “right” way, where “right” meant “which way has the best future prospects given what I am using my computer for.
YES!
I have been a low-level user for years when I have an issue sometimes there way too many possible solutions.
And many are undated and from some ancient version.
Now using the time parameter when searching for Linux assistance.
That said: I like it.
Especially after the ransomware note popped out one day!
After clicking a trusted link, OH CRAP.
I called my guru, He said don’t sweat it, ran some diagnostics; all A-OK.
Thank you Mr Torvalds.
Wishful thinking. Windows will continue to dominate for the next few years. I cant speak or anytime after that.
Thanks for the info - still hesitating to go full LINUX but am more open every day.
“is a fork of Linux (not arguably)”
If I could run my Android apps on Linux, I would be quite pleased.
I am quite pleased!
I agree, as long as Win 7 is supported. But that fork in the road is coming fast.
I always laugh when people claim that linux being a time suck is a canard.
If linux were easier to install, maintain, and use, it would be on the majority of business PCs.
It’s not, because it’s a time suck.
Yeah--that's why the Windows team here at work is four times the size of the Open Systems team when they only have twice the number of servers.
And frankly, I could perform the monthly maintenance on our 2000+ servers by myself and still have enough time to do all my other chores. The windows guys are all running around like chickens with their heads cut off.
Yup. I’m sure you’re laughing every time a new virus or worm sweeps through the MS-Windows computers of the world. I know I do.
