It is rather a respect for the dead *and* the living.
I’d prefer no one dig up my parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles... or me...
... steal their bones to put on display, along with any service flags, personal items, etc., for others to gawk at, measure, build careers on, take pictures of, or otherwise satisfy their own prurient interests.
One of the primitive beliefs lost after the ancient Egyptian rites died out is that the dead are in their graves.
