You are describing a squirrel.

Gray squirrels do not like to be out in the dark. They will come in before dark, many times just before.

If you find the way they go up to get into your house, like a tree next to your house, a live trap near that tree baited with Peanut Butter is s good choice.

Tomahawk makes excellent live traps for squirrels, too. A few Ritz crackers broke in half just outside then inside before the trigger plate makes it hard to resist. If you get the Tomahawk Trap, get the Easy Release door model. Whatever you do, don’t release them a mile or two away, or they’ll be back.

I set a Havahart trap out once for a destructive cat. I caught Mrs. Chandler’s Pug dog. The visuals were hilarious.
