I don’t follow NBA or college basketball too closely. But when did things change? I know many years ago, that the NBA didn’t draft players until they had finished their college eligibility. Was there a legal case involved, and/or agreement with the NBA players union, about when players can enter the NBA?

“One and done” has been the rule for years.

In the past, high school players were also eligible to be selected. However, starting in the 2006 draft, high school players were not eligible to enter the draft directly after graduating from high school. The rules now state that high school players will gain eligibility for draft selection one year after their high school graduation, and they must also be at least 19 years old as of the end of the calendar year of the draft.(from wikipedia)

Lots of legal cases but the main reason for the one-and-done was because NBA GM’s couldn’t stop speculating on high school players.
For every Lebron James there were multitudes of wash-outs; the one-and-done allows the pro teams to evaluate players for a year and get a better handle on their skill level.
