An Amtrak train headed for Los Angeles with nearly 200 people on board came to a standstill Sunday evening after hitting a tree that had fallen onto the tracks.

More than 24 hours later, there's still no movement. Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari told CNN none of the 183 passengers and dozen crew members were injured, but that "conditions further deteriorated with numerous track blockages from snow and fallen trees."

In the 1960s, some local lumberjack would have come out....cut the tree in half, and hauled off the tree in a matter of three hours. I guess they are waiting on some lumberjack to arrive?

If it’s on the coast (the Seattle-LA run?), there’s really big trees there, like several feet in diameter - those take special care to take down. (But then that’s also logging country, so you’d think there would be somebody capable around there)

It happened to me about 20 years ago, near Whistler on BC Rail, a big hemlock fell across the tracks and we were stranded for 6 hours ... went through their entire liquor supply, free of charge of course

My thought. Passenger trains are far more accommodable than airplanes today. They’re stocked with supplies enough for several days at least. They probably won’t have to resort to cannibalism.

they’re waiting for the state to approve the destruction of a felled tree known to be the habitat of the spotted owl and three-toed ant. And the approval is pending receipt of an environmental impact statement on placing any felled tree parts on either side of the tracks, as well as effects of local demolition upon the surrounding wildlife and steps taken to mitigate such effects, filed in triplicate.

Opposite end of country here, but we had many trees down past few days & some took forever to clear (one blocking a 4-lane state hwy) because they were so numerous. Hope the train passengers get out soon if they haven’t already.

This is more of a snow story than a train being stopped by a tree. It seems like all the places that have been suffering from less snow for the last 10 years are finally getting it again. It’s all Cyclical.

Passenger Carly Bigby told CNN affiliate KOIN 6 the snack cart on the train is empty and people have run out of diapers for their children.

In 1972 or 73, my wife and I took AMTRACK from Chicago to DC. The food had been stolen from the train before we left the Chicago yards. Tornadoes devastated Cincinnati, knocking out all power. Our train was delayed and hand switched through town. 8 hours late to DC making a 24 hour run into more than 30. No food, no coffee, no liquor; the little kids really suffered.

" (But then that’s also logging country, so you’d think there would be somebody capable around there)"

Democrats have spent the last 20 years diligently destroying the lumber industry, around here. Old growth forests are off limits, and while replanted trees are starting to get large enough for harvesting, finding young men who are willing to take the risks inherent in lumbering is harder, all the time.

The public schools in Oregon and Washington have spent a long time convincing children that a degree in gender studies is worth more than being able to set a choker.

A straight snow/train story minus tree:
