Why Michelle Obama Disliked Working at Sidley—and the Lessons That Still Apply

Her buffed walnut desk. Her view from the 47th floor overlooking Lake Michigan. Recruiting law students. The money.

That’s what Michelle Obama liked about working at Sidley Austin.

What she didn’t like: Everything else.

I’ve been reading Obama’s autobiography “Becoming,” and have been struck by her dismal depiction of the three years she spent as an associate at the firm from 1988 to 1991.

The National Association for Law Placement puts out a periodic report it calls “Keeping the Keepers” about associate retention. Sidley for a brief time employed two of the keeping-est keepers you could imagine: Michelle Robinson and Barack Obama, who met in 1989 when he was a summer associate at the firm.

But both got away.

In hindsight, it seems clear that no matter how nice, how appreciative, how flattering Sidley leaders were to Barack (and according to Michelle, they were very), the 44th president was never going to pursue a career in Big Law. That was not his path.

But the future first lady? The way she tells it in her autobiography, practicing law simply wasn’t for her.

“I hated being a lawyer. I wasn’t suited to the work. I felt empty doing it, even if I was plenty good at it,” Obama wrote.

My bet is, she loved the money and all the trappings. But having to do actual work? Not so much.

For the first time in her life, she was proud of being a lawyer.

Yep. She liked everything except having to work.

When she went to work at the University of Chicago Medical Center, her idea of work was to wash her hands of problems by dumping her hospital's underprivileged patients on county hospitals who had to absorb them.

I'll bet the POS was good at that.

It doesn’t want to work, it wants to sashay that barrel ass around and make people think it’s something “on a stick”. It’s beneath work, didn’t you know?

I can’t imagine what a nightmare it would have been to have that abl even on the same floor and trying to practice real law at Sidley and Austin. She would have alienated every lawyer with 100 offices of her nasty ass self.

Which is why she won’t run for president - unless, of course, like Hillary, she is given a free path and a coronation.

A very expensive token. They were nothing until Oprah dressed them up and let them sit on her couch.

She was so bad at it that she got disbarred - a horrible experience and one that the media and entire left has gone through great pains to cover up.

They paychecks were nice though.

No.

It is an inaccurate myth that the Obamas were disbarred. Neither Barack nor Michelle Obama were disbarred. Both voluntarily “retired” their law licenses. As such, neither may practice law unless they seek to be reinstated.

In retrospect, it was an astute decision because by doing so the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission of the Supreme Court of Illinois was without jurisdiction to investigate either for malpractice or misconduct.

Barack Obama, himself, may have engaged in misconduct when he applied to be an attorney and claimed that he was never known by any other name.

Not true.

She “retired” her law license.

Disbarment is a form of discipline imposed upon lawyers by the licensing agency of the state supreme court.

can anyone verify or debunk this story.

Michelle was on the board of a hospital in Chicago. She received 160,000 or so a year. Obama was elected to the US senate. HE added pork to a bill and the hospital got a large grant. Her salary doubled.

Sorry, read this a few years ago and can’t source it now.
