WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – A fired Florida police officer was found guilty of manslaughter and attempted murder Thursday for fatally shooting a stranded black motorist, becoming the first officer in the state to be convicted of an on-duty shooting in 30 years.

Nouman Raja, 41, faces a mandatory minimum of 25 years at sentencing April 26, and could spend his life in prison for the death of Corey Jones, 31.

The four-man, two-woman jury deliberated for four hours. Raja didn't react as the verdict was read. About 25 relatives and supporters of Jones looked on, some weeping. One said "the sweetest sound was the click of those handcuffs" after Raja was led away.

They held a prayer circle outside the courtroom, shouting praise for the verdict as many sobbed. A housing inspector and part-time drummer, Jones came from a family of Christian ministers and was scheduled to perform at church the morning he died.

His lawyer didn’t even put him on the stand. A plainclothes detective should have experience in standing up under cross examination. A puzzling strategy.

I read the article and the first thought was I am glad I wasn’t in the position.

He went off the deep end in the coverup. I understand wanting to do that but the lesson to us all is shut up.

Some will read it that I support the officer. My point is it was a crappy situation for both the guy killed and the officer. One little thing different and the outcome might have been different.

But none of us have all the information. I am just responding to the info in the article.

That pic always reminds me of the guy from the opening of Enter the Dragon - the one that Jim Kelly encounters.

IANAL but I think stealing a police car is bad.

Not that he could prove he was defending himself, LOL

“As the officer exited his vehicle, he was suddenly confronted by an armed subject,” the police department said in a statement. “As a result of the confrontation, the officer discharged his firearm, resulting in the death of the subject.”

They wonder why nobody likes them.
