Just saw Captain Marvel. There was no overt social justice content. Just that she's a resilient woman. Her back story is about as touching as you're going to get in a super hero origin film. In that regard, think of Captain America's first movie for a similar emotional impact.
This is more than Captain Marvel's origin story, it's also the back story for Nick Fury and Agent Coulson. You kind of can't go wrong with a movie that features Samuel L. Jackson. Anyone who's been following the MCU will be fascinated watching the revealed history, and then the 2 scenes during the credits, especially the first scene.
The opening credits are a visual tribute to Stan Lee, a nice touch.
Brie Larson is attractive and projects credible strength, along with sensitivity. She was believable in the part.
The story was different yet familiar to fans of Marvel movies. The film essentially is a prequel Avengers story and works way better than most prequel movies.
No reason to avoid this film whatsoever, and lots of rewards for fans of MCU. The trailer for the new Spiderman film also features Samuel L. Jackson and looked quite good.
Meh, I’ll wait till it comes to Netflix or Hulu.
What? Can't stand the guy! Not long ago he was complaining about black British actors being cast in American films. Jackson has type-cast himself, always playing angry, arrogant, obnoxious, and foul-mouthed characters in every movie I've ever seen him in. His demeanor never changes, no matter what role he plays. I'll take Idris Elba over Jackson any day.
99% of actors are leftist Aholes but I still like movies. SLJ is a compelling movie personality, IMHO. I guess you could say he’s a character actor.
I liked the Babylon Bee’s review:

Just like when conservatives were STEAMING MAD over AOC dancing in college! Or Malia Obama drinking underage. Man, were we pissed! Had steam coming out of ears like in the Looney Tunes. Ripping our shirts off like Hogan.

Captain Marvel Star Says Film is About Intersectional Feminism
https://www.breitbart.com/entertainment/2019/03/06/captain-marvel-star-says-film-is-about-intersectional-feminism/
The star of Captain Marvel, the comic companys first film starring a female lead, has proclaimed the film to be about intersectional feminism.
Is it a comic book movie? Surely it will win Best Picture at next years Oscars. I must say though the Larson girl is pretty nice looking for a leftist douchebag
I still won’t waste my money, because I will not support the communist in control of the industry.
“You kind of can’t go wrong with a movie that features Samuel L. Jackson.”
You obviously have never seen Formula 51. Besides, Jackson is a big-mouth, anti-Trump, Hollywood liberal.
“No reason to avoid this film whatsoever”
That depends entirely on the criteria you set for yourself or your children.
From Pluggedin.com:
“CRUDE OR PROFANE LANGUAGE
After a cat scratches Nick Fury, the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent utters an exclamation that hints at the f-word (and might sound like one to some). We also hear two s-words, along with a few uses each of ‘a—,’ ‘d—n’ and ‘h-—.’ The vulgarity ‘b—tard’ also makes a solitary appearance, and we hear two misuses of Gods name.”
Seems that Captain Marvel is tame / clean by Hollywood standards, but it would not have met the production code guidelines in place when a Christian culture greatly influenced the content of Hollywood films.
Here is the first item of the code:
Resolved, That those things which are included in the following list shall not appear in pictures produced by the members of this Association, irrespective of the manner in which they are treated:
1. Pointed profanity by either title or lip this includes the words “God”, “Lord”, “Jesus”, “Christ” (unless they be used reverently in connection with proper religious ceremonies), “hell”, “damn”, “Gawd”, and every other profane and vulgar expression however it may be spelled;
This would disqualify 99% of Hollywood movies targeted toward adults and teenagers today.
I’m not saying Captain Marvel is not worth seeing. I am saying that, as a Christian society, we have lowered our standards considerably. And this is part of why our nation is in such bad shape morally.
The Lord’s prayer says, “Hallowed be Thy name.” But many Christians think nothing of paying good money for Hollywood actors to blaspheme God’s name which is repeated millions of times all over the world, and teaches young people to mimic their blasphemous ways.
==============================
Without giving away any spoilers, my take from seeing the film opening day is similar to this vanity post. It is NOT anti-male feminist propaganda though I'm sure a bunch of hard heads here will REFUSE to admit they were wrong and cherry pick certain scenes and dialogue to "prove" the film has some insidious undercurrent to make men look bad. You have to be really reaching to find that though -- most of Nick Fury's missteps in this movie can be chalked up to the fact its a prequel set in the 1990s and its the first time he's ever encountered extraterrestrial beings with superpowers -- NOT because he's a toxic masculinity character who needs a strong womyn figure to save the day.
My overall impression of the film is slightly less positive than the op-ed here. I thought it was average as far as Marvel movies go -- better than disappointing "meh" movies like Iron Man 2, but inferior to the best Marvel pictures like Ant-Man and Captain America: Winter Solider. The quality is similar to Black Panther, in that its typical popcorn action movie comic book fare trying to make itself out to be something more, although Black Panther tried to pretend to be a black empowerment movie FAR more than this film tried to pretend to be a "girl power!" movie. I caught precisely ONE scene where they shoehorned in some "young girl gets pep talk that one day SHE TOO can be a superhero", and was a blink-and-you'll-miss-it scene.
Agree that the Stan Lee tribute in the opening credits is a lovely "awwwww" touch, and it works surprisingly well as a prequel considering they've never mentioned the character until now. There's a good twist halfway thru the film that I won't give away. The movie takes a while to get going, and a lot of the movie was scattershot and Captain Marvel has an awesome superpower but is just not that good of a character compared to the "main" Marvel figures like Iron Man and Captain America. Brie Larson's acting was decent, though. A lot of the humor worked very well, without giving anything away, the best part of the movie was a pet cat.
They HEAVILY layer on the 90s nostalgia here... a lot of the scenes brought back memories of my teen years (people having useless pagers, CD-ROMs taking forever to load, the grundge era, etc.) Again, worked for my generation the way the Star Wars fanboys get all misty about experiencing that in the 70s but I don't give a crap because those films were old news when I was a kid. I felt it would have worked better if they actually FILMED the movie as a "90s style" superhero movie (think Batman Forever) instead of a 2019 movie with a modern tone and style just using endless 1990s pop culture references and music. I loved the '90s rock/pop soundtrack and it brought back memories of H.S., but a lot of it obviously wouldn't be used in an ACTUAL c. 1995 era comic book movie... for example there's some random revelation scene where they play Nirvana and I can't imagine a movie made in 1995 would feature then-comtemporary Nirvana songs unless it was some teen angst type of movie.
Finally, for those boycotting the movie because lead actress Brie Larson is a liberal feminazi loon, you're gonna have to pretty much boycott EVERY Hollywood movie from now on. Check out the guy who plays Hulk in these Marvel movies (and I'M still mad that he replaced Edward Norton!) That guy is such a raging left-wing activist that Brie Larson looks like Rush Limbaugh in comparison.
Final thoughts: decent movie, but not really worth of a theatrical viewing and if you wanna wait for it on video, fine by me. But if you loathe the movie and refuse to accept or see anything with Captain Marvel... well, that's gonna make it really hard to follow the next Marvel movie. Oh well. Your loss!
An enjoyable movie, but I was hoping for more. Marvel could have done a lot better here.
I’ll watch the movie but probably in a way that doesn’t feed the beast who works against us all the time.
S.L. Jackson is a leftist ass who has no depth of character. He is the same in all the characters I’ve seen him play. He maximized his blackness to his advantage at a time when Hollywood is going woke.
Um, yeah you can. I won't pay to see one damn thing with a guy who called my president a "motherf**ker". Bad enough it has an actress who spent months bashing white men. No thanks.
However, I recently saw “Kingsman: The Secret Service” (2014).
I thought Jackson was a brilliant comedy villain in that film.
Sorry, Larson has a bad case of "Resting Bitch Face".
Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman) is way, way hotter. (She actually seems happy!)
This is one area where DC kicks Marvel's rear end.
Larsen is wooden, & Jackson has mailed it in for 10 years.
You can, but I’m not.
Did they Mary Sue her though?
