Hey, don’t laugh. I’m from Chicago. During the older Mayor Daly’s reign, you could bribe the cops. I was 17 years old and got stopped for speeding on the Dan Ryan. I opened my wallet to show him my driver’s license, and I had a twenty, peeking out. He said, “Add another 20 and we’ll let this pass.”
Back in the day, I had a Chicago cop follow me on the outer Drive, all the way to work. I couldnt figure out what I had done. He pulled up next to me when I parked and come over to my car and asked if he could have my name and number. Not kidding. These days that would probably be grounds for firing. Back in the 70s.......no big deal.
Ahhhh, the memories. I remember driving back up to the Near North area after work when the DJ on WLS announced that Mayor Daley had died. I thought ooooh, that guy is going to get fired for that joke. Turned out it was true.
