It makes sense, having already angered gun owners, I imagine few of them were still shopping at Dicks Bingo.
The other angle is this:
The 'evil' black guns were the premier product in the store. Take those away, and there's less reason to shop there for any type of firearm. Lot more convenient to shop where there's a full selection of guns.

Been to DSG once, 10yrs ago; wasn’t impressed. Never went back. Same. I found the place to be quiet and austere. Not inviting at all.

I kinda wish I had been a Dicks customer so I could take my business away from them. Me too, but there's not a Dick's convenient to our location. Academy gets most of our sporting goods business by default.
My wife and I were in a Dick's for something years ago, but I don't think we made a purchase. I remember the place as being a bit cold and stiff.

I have bought a fair amount of stuff at REI, especially in the last year. I didn't know they had a used division. Their new stuff can be pricey, but so far they haven't made it clear that they don't want my business.

Now that they have come out as anti-gun, they have lost my golf and sporting goods sales as well. The fact that their CEO is now removing all guns from their shelves, just proves that he didn't hear the consumers the first time.
I mean, this guy read the market exactly backwards, and is now gleefully preparing to chop another limb off the company.
