An Iditarod sled dog that crossed the finish line Thursday night in Nome died two days later at an Anchorage animal hospital, race officials reported Saturday night.

The dog, a 5-year-old female named Oshi, was a member of rookie musher Richie Beattie’s team, which was the 21st team to finish. Beattie was the first rookie to reach Nome, but he has been withdrawn from the race and his finish is no longer reflected in the Iditarod standings.

The death is the first of this year’s Iditarod, which started March 3 with 52 teams. Nine teams remained on the trail as of 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

According to a press release from the Iditarod, a preliminary diagnosis showed the dog died from aspiration pneumonia.

I expect the Iditarod to go the way of the Ringling Bros. Circus in the not too distant future.

If it’s the FIRST one this year, does that mean it’s expected each year that a number will die?

Aspiration Pneumonia?

Maybe those that don’t give a #### should catch it themselves and then run a race in the cold to see how it feels.

This isn’t hunting.

I don’t know what this is.

Another Piece of Americana disappears, due to the lunatic fringe POSs.

Poor dog. I’m not even a dog fanatic like some, but I feel sorry for the animal.

That disqualifies the participant when a dog dies.

I’m not either. I think PETA are actually borderline psychotic. They make no distinction between humans and animals.

And I’ll catch hell for my post as it is probably a much anticipated event in Alaska.

I just don’t like to see needless animal suffering.

If the dogs are treated very well year round and this is a fluke, then I dont know...

I guess I would really have to read up on the whole thing to get a better idea of what it’s all about.

I’d be more impressed by a cross country ski race myself

I guess if it happened frequently then they need to rethink the whole thing. If it’s a rare occurrence, well, it’s just sad that it happened.

If humans want to race each other in Arctic cold, that is their own free will. But leave the animals out of it. Dogs especially are extremely loyal creatures who will do anything their owners ask of them. In exchange for this loyalty, humans have the responsibility to use discretion and treat their animals in a humane manner.

6 dogs died in ‘17. only 1 last year and it got run over.

To call people who care about dogs dying for a race is over the top for me but I do not live there and don’t know enough about the sport to make a very informed comment except that I don’t take pleasure in seeing animals die from exhaustion.

This isn’t hunting.

I respect your posts and the issue doesn’t mean enough to me to argue with another FReeper.

But I’ll tell you one thing. These dogs’ deaths bother me more than what happened in NZ.

938 miles, 10 - 15 days...A brutal race for the dogs. I don't see any point in it at all.

Too many dog deaths have occurred over the years and there's no record of those that have died while in training.........

I just read up on aspiration pneumonia. Poor fella probably inhaled too much of his own slobber or snot while running, or wolfed down chewed-up kibble too fast then he was panting, and got it into his lungs (probably the former). I could see the kibble, too - we have five cats, and if the wife gets out the bag of cat treats, it’s like watching Joey Chestnut vs. Kobiyashi in a Nathan’s hot dog eating contest. Ten minutes later, there would be at least one pile of barf somewhere in the house that looks like a Stuckey’s nut log. We used to have a fat Dachshund who, when she ate, looked like an old steam-powered backhoe digging a trench to lay a new water pipe.

The dog inhaled his own vomit and couldn’t expel it. She died which is sad. Why is your tone so angry and bitter? It is sad, it disqualifies the guy from his finish, but it is after all his dog.

Do you feel the same when a horse breaks its leg and is destroyed? Horse racing will go on forever because the ELITES are the ones who perpetuate the race.

I for one, think it is cruel to neuter dogs, and slander those who sell puppies without papers and credentials as owners of “puppie mills”. BITD, we used to call them Uncle Bill, Neighbor, or friend. Dogs were practically free, they were rarely purebred, and frankly better and healthier animals.

The dogs are not mistreated. They train as a team and if you have ever had the enjoyment of being pulled by a sled team, you would know how much energy and enthusiasm the dogs have when they get harnessed up. There is no whipping to get them going. Quite the opposite. The sled has to be stake down to prevent the dogs taking off too early and the stake is released when the sled is ready to go. It takes off like a rocket shot. The dogs live for being part of the team.

If that was “bitter” to you, you should look up the definition.

Just because a person owns an animal doesn’t mean they get to do whatever they want to it.

No kidding, I won’t give a #### about this whole thing in 5 minutes.

That was my initial reaction. Deal with it.

I’m referring to the race itself, as a long-standing Piece of Americana. I hate to see animals die needlessly; I take glee in seeing hardened criminals, murderers and terrorists die by the thousands/millions.

I agree 100% with that sentiment on NZ.
