Last week President Trump announced a landmark new trade agreement replacing NAFTA, a deal that he thinks will pour cash and jobs into the US economy. We dont want to debate the merits of Trumps approach to trade, but the world should always pay attention when the leader of the worlds largest economy starts talking about tariffs. Our newest visualization highlights exactly how big the U.S. economy is compared to the every other country in the world.
Our visualization neatly slices the latest 2017 GDP numbers from the World Bank, released on 21st of September 2018, a few different ways. The underlying idea is that GDP is not a zero-sum game, meaning the pie can continue to grow for every country in the world and not just a few. Each slice represents the total economic output, or GDP, of a country in 2017, the latest year for which definite and complete data are available. The color corresponds to its geographic location, and we included the percentage of the worlds economy each country makes up for easy references. This lets you immediately see which countries and continents dominate the world economy, and which ones lag way behind.

It's also worth noting that the US' citizenry - again, about 4% of the world's total - holds about 46% of the total firearms globally.
As I said, we're not without blemish. There are lots of things that need to be fixed. However, on this Sunday, let's take a moment and be thankful for the abundance we have, the wind we have at our backs, and the potential waiting to be unleashed.
I’m sure the Democrats will say this success is all due Obama waving his magic wand and bringing jobs back to the US....oh wait, he said Trump must have a magic wand if he thinks he can do that. Wrong again Owrongo.
Where are the 25% tariffs Trump promised us?
Back in the early 1970’s the Soviet Union would have dominated that graphic. Where are they now?
My point isn't necessarily pro or anti-Trump or even Obama or any president for that matter. Government can foster or hinder the environment in which the people exercise their calling in life. Presidents certainly impact the nation, but it is her people more than government that drive the economic engine. I never slowed down during Obama or Clinton and I didn't speed up under Bush or Trump. These data help with the thesis that America is peopled with vibrant, industrious, and hard-working individuals which haven't been eclipsed by ANY other nation in terms of economic output or prosperity.
Really neat. Thanks for posting.
“It’s also worth noting that the US’ citizenry - again, about 4% of the world’s total - holds about 46% of the total firearms globally.”
A respectable number but we can do better. Let’s get it above 50%!
And what’s really going on along the southern border?
Russia’s 1.99% is mostly from oil and gas production. Without that it would be less than the Netherlands.
Agreed,
Our Slice of the Pie!
And that is for 2017, before the Trump policies really kicked in.
it is called data visualization.
My son is in to this and is making a good living from it.
Good job DoodleBob.
/ bitter, "I hate Liberal propaganda" sarc
What gets me is the Dems brag about how many millions of jobs created under Obama but from what I’ve read, many were minimum wage jobs and a lot of folks were taking two jobs to make ends meet. Couple that with Obamacare, slashing the military, the Dodd/ Frank fiasco, Fast and Furious, Benghazi and the Iran Nuclear scam I’d say Obama and crew did a miserable job at governing.
Imagine this country with all the socialists and muslims and illegals all gone, not allowed to return.
Welcoming in people who respect our laws and come here legally, through our laws that are much more lax than their home countries, welcoming in people who will integrate and assimilate as opposed to balkanizing and demanding special changes to accomodate tgem. Welcoming in people who will preserve our form of government rather than those using socialist hegelian dialectic and alinsky tactics to destroy it while falsely calling it “progress”.

While I would LOVE this take credit for these visualization, they are from howmuch.net. In all candor, I love it when people make data come alive. Edward Tufte started this process decades ago. I am pleased to hear your son is doing well in this profession...we need more people like him to make the complex, simple.
New Zealand’s descent into gun idiocy is a great opportunity for us....what if America offered to buy all their guns? It’s like a great big gun “buy back.”
