Six University of Connecticut administrators, led by outgoing President Susan Herbst, collectively have amassed nearly 150 vacation days in excess of normal policy limits that are valued at roughly $214,000, UConn records show.
And while Herbst now says she will forfeit the 54 days she accrued above the 60-day limit, she still is eligible to receive $156,279 for the rest of the unused vacation time when she leaves state service.
Meanwhile, five other administrators hold 96 bonus vacation days worth a combined $73,287.
In addition, university records show 12 other management-level personnel were granted multiple exceptions to accrue more than 60 vacation days between 2013 and 2017, while two additional administrators received cash payouts in recent years that included unused vacation days in excess of the 60-day limit.
Rep. Carol Hall of Enfield, the ranking House Republican on the Higher Education and Employment Advancement Committee, said given the rising cost of tuition at public colleges and universities, there needs to be greater oversight on administrative compensation.
It flabbergasts me, Hall said of the repeated exceptions to the vacation policy. And then when you look at the tuition these kids are being saddled with. Theres got to be a better oversight system. How involved are the trustees?

Herbst was granted five exceptions.

Based on her annual salary of $711,072, her total vacation time is worth $296,768, and the 54 days in excess of the cap is worth $140,489.

But it’s fur the children...
As someone who rarely takes my allotted vacation time, I need to see more before I condemn these people for this.
You’re kidding right???
She didn’t go above by accident.
You’re VERY open minded. As open as some folks at DU :)
Connecticut is open for giving the tax payers the business.
No money is lost on this.
I agree. If she was effectively not allowed to take her vacation time then allowing her to accrue it over the limit doesn’t seem out of line.
I remember the prison guards in California are often not allowed to take vacations and then they were losing their time because they didn’t take it. There was a lawsuit and I don’t remember how that turned out.
This is not where CT state employees are raping the CT taxpayer.
But Orange Man Bad
Ha. The Herbst family were friends with mine when I was growing up.
Wow. Just think if the TAXPAYER were involved in any/all govt <> union talk/contracts as an *equal*...instead of merely the piggy-bank
I am mandated to take my vacay every year. If I don’t it’s a trip to the spanking room. I am not allowed to keep anything over 3 hours year to year. The exception is sick time, where keeping a 6 month bank (it takes a LONG time to get there) is recommended, as LTD has a mandatory 6 month wait.
