Tesla makes deal with Fiat Chrysler to pool fleet for EU emission requirement

Tesla sent out an invite to automakers who could use its important zero-emission fleet in Europe and according to an update on the European Commission’s website, Fiat Chrysler took them up on the offer.

It also comes at a great time as Tesla is believed to be under a significant cash crunch following a lackluster first quarter in 2019.

That said, Tesla shouldn’t expect it to last for too long because automakers don’t like to send money to their competitors.

This is a smart move by Chrysler.

They have wasted less money on EVs / hybrids than any other manufacturer. Now they buy the regualatory offsets from TSLA for pennies on the dollar.

If global warming collapses as total BS (which I think it will), Chysler can just walk with minimal cost, vs the other auto manuf who have wasted tens of billions on EVs.

Regulatory capture almost certainly guarantees that the EU will continue some EV mandates even if we get massive global cooling. So FCA may be able to pick the bones of TSLA for anything useful to service that niche market.

If I understand it correctly, this move is on the Euros.
Fiat pays Tesla to avoid paying euro taxes.

Yes, and early euro Tesla sales have been good.

YMMV.

I’ve said for years, now, that his is the only value for Tesla. As long a governments foolishly require EVs Tesla will have some residual value. This will some day collapse.

You have hit the nail on the head. Tesla is an example of crony capitalism. Without the tax credits, free charging stations, and outright subsidies Tesla Motors goes under. Its stock is valued based on continuing government interference in the marketplace.

It's a smart move by Tesla as well. Wholehearted agree, this is a brilliant move by FCAU, they'd be naked in the face of the higher-priced and better-engineered Euro (esp German) automakers. Fiat-Chrysler's been teaming with various smaller Asian automakers for parts (engines from Mazda most recently, if memory serves) and under the brilliant but alas late previous Fiat boss, paid off the entire debt load incurred from buying Chrysler in the first place. He also kept trying to sell the Jeep brand to various competitors, none were interested, then President Trump came into office, and (for whatever reason ;^) the price of gasoline went down and stayed there, and half the United States started buying larger vehicles again (dodged a bullet there). EVs are ideal for most daily driving (which is within 25 miles of home, after all; in Europe the Nissan Leaf has been a big seller for years, and still isn't stellar vis a vis range) and the EU's got a bunch of escalating nanny-state requirements that will take way too much time to implement, better to scoop up this Tesla deal, big timesaver.
