Rulings are starting to pop out from Judge Garaufis' chambers. First out of the chute is Kathy Russell's motion to dismiss is denied. Her lawyers argued that she wouldn't have testified for the grand jury if she'd known that she was a subject of investigation.
I'll pause to let you chuckle on that one. It looks more like her Clare Bronfman-provided lawyer at the time torpedoed her chance at freedom by allowing her to testify at the grand jury when she knew it was a criminal inquiry and knew that NXIVM committed crimes. The other thing he did was refuse to discuss any proffers from the prosecution and FBI. Observers think she'll have a plea deal wrapped up before the trial starts on May 6th.
In other big news, it appears Karen Unterreiner, a near 40-year associate of Keith Raniere, will testify for the prosecution.
Karen started dating Keith back in the mid-70s when she was a 17 year old freshman at college. She's been with him ever since. All throughout his early "Consumer Byline" scam days, through NXIVM, through DOS. Of course, when she got to about 30 years old Keith didn't like her much anymore. That's when she started grooming and pimping underage teens for her Keith.
She's bad medicine up to her neck, but got one of the first seats on the plea deal bus back when Raniere was on the run in Mexico.
Unterreiner flipped with probably an immunity deal. Lauren and Nancy Salzman, and Allison Mack got plea deals but will probably still get jail time.
Kathy Russell will probably be next to reach a deal. That leaves Clare Bronfman and Keith Raniere in the dock. No telling how that's going to work out. They and others will doubtless be named in civil lawsuits for years to come. All that Bronfman money will be at stake.
