Yep, same with my family. They loved serving under him.
He was great. He is also outstanding in his version of A Christmas Carol. If you’re a Scott fan, you should check that out.
I agree. It sure wasn’t an effective way to eliminate him. Hell, as it was, he almost survived.
Well I like the original better. I’m sure his performance is great but to see it also in color doesn’t give the same dreary impression of Dickens’ London of the mid-eighteen hundreds. Same thing with the remake of My Man Godfrey; the original made in 1936 is way better than the color version made in 1957.
“My dad was with the Third Army under Patton”
So was mine. I think he had the same view of Patton as yours.
“...He had already rearmed the Herman Goering Division....”
Citation please!
“....
In early May, units of the corps attempted to break out towards the American forces on the Elbe, but were unsuccessful. The corps surrendered to the Red Army on 8 May 1945.
..........”
So the Russian released them to Patton and he re-armed them?
I know several military historians who are very critical of Patton. His Hurtgen Forrest campaign was a disaster!
Also Patton played a key role in delaying the deployment of the Pershing tank. This tank was comparable if not superior to the German Panther. A lot of young men died in the obsolete Sherman. Which was kept in production and kept deployed thanks to Patton way too long. The Sherman Easy-8s were an adequate stop gap but conversion kits were short in number and it was only adequate.
So many parallels with DJT.
Thinking the same thing, someone told me once, if you can’t be a SOB, go hire an SOB.
Then there is the school of thought, that after you’re done with the SOB you have to hire another SOB to kill the first SOB.
I like the George C. Scott version.
...
I don’t think Scott liked Patton. He did a great job in the film, though.
They would have sent him home and forced his retirement.
There was no need to kill him. He never would have survived in the world of politics.
I know several military historians who are very critical of Patton.
...
My impression of Patton is that he was extremely ambitious. Climbing the ranks was more important than anything.
Having known several WW2 veterans with a belief that Patton was murdered, their explanation was that it was Patton’s viability as a politician at home that caused him to be targeted by the then Deep State.
As noted, his immediate military views were easy to neutralize without killing him.
Yep!
That’s what they told me!
Patton’s good points:
Very aggressive
There’s more but that’s key!
Patton’s bad points:
Very aggressive.
The failed concentration camp raid is an example.
Again more, but the point being sometimes prudence is the answer.
Most of the time Patton’s offensive imprudent risks could be covered up by air power.(Allies totally dominate by that time!) When that couldn’t be applied he had problems.
My uncles fought under Patton, and they called him ‘old blood and guts’ cuz he threw his men away in combat, wasted them. They followed him cuz there was no alternative, but they never liked him as far as i remember.
I heard he didn’t show up at the Academy Awards to receive his Oscar for best actor and this also during the anti-military time.
“I bet this one will be politically correct and with liberal nonsense added”.
I’ve seen one of the trailers. You’re wrong, completely wrong.
“I know several military historians who are very critical of Patton. His Hurtgen Forrest campaign was a disaster”!
That was Courtney Hodges First Army, not Third Army.
I think you are referring to Metz.
And Korea surely would have LOVED to ‘occupy’ Japan....
I have read that Eisenhower stopped the US advance toward Prague and Berlin for the simple reason that he did not want to subject our troops to the anticipated horrendous casualties anticipated in the final push. Let the Russians suffer the losses.
The American public could care less about the Russians. They just wanted to stop the losses of our troops.
Ike was correct. We had given enough.
“I wonder when Bill O’Reilly is going to come out with a book entitled : KILLING PATTON (ooops.... he already did! )”
A watered down copy of “Target Patton”
