Patton was engaging in all sorts of wrongthink. It was convenient for the powers that be that he died.

Is this reopening an old rumor or justifying it?

I seem to remember hearing something a while back that one of the main reasons we ‘annihilated’ Japan was to keep the Russians out as they were getting ready to invade and we didn’t want another Europe type dividing the spoils.

Of course, since the victors write the History books that theory may have been established as giving Japan a ‘we saved you from Russian domination’....

Maybe that is where the phrase ‘We must destroy your village to save it’ was originated...<: <: <:

Patton died of injuries received from a simple automobile accident. These conspiracy theories are all nonsense with authors cashing in on Patton’s legend.

Patton should not have accepted the job of Military Governor of Bavaria. He was the wrong person with the wrong temperament for the job.

He died due to the accident, nothing more.

They would have sent him home and forced his retirement.

There was no need to kill him. He never would have survived in the world of politics.

My uncles fought under Patton, and they called him ‘old blood and guts’ cuz he threw his men away in combat, wasted them. They followed him cuz there was no alternative, but they never liked him as far as i remember.

I still contend that the Russians deliberately had his window opened in his hospital room causing him to catch pneumonia and Die.

I agree with Centurion 316 and Laplata regarding there was NO conspiracy to kill Patton. And for all his otherwise faults, Bill O’Riley makes that clear at the end of his book “Killing Patton.” Patton’s decision to go hunting on the day of the accident was made that morning according to statements of his driver and General Hobart Gay, Patton’s companion on the trip. If I can find the review I wrote about Reiley’s “Killing Patton” I will post it in this thread.

Introduction to “The Patton Episode” by Dr. R. Glen Spurling, MD.

The death of General George S. Patton, Jr., on December 21, 1945, in Heidelberg, Germany, has produced a cottage industry of examinations and/or speculation about the cause of the auto accident on December 9 near Mannheim, Germany, and whether or not he was murdered in the Heidelberg Hospital.
The following document entitled “The Patton Episode” was written afterward by the attending neurosurgeon, Colonel R. Glen Spurling, M.D. Colonel Spurling was the Senior Consultant in Neurosurgery for the Surgeon General of the US Army. After the auto accident that left General Patton paralyzed, Colonel Spurling was ordered to fly to Germany and personally attend to the general. This account provides a detailed description of the injury, the treatment General Patton received and the cause of his death on December 21, 1945. Colonel Spurling wrote his account in March, 1957, in response to the various theories about “the real cause” of Patton’s accident and death. He provided a copy to the US Army Center of Military History, where this document currently resides.

General Patton deserves my highest praise: He would have been an outstanding and beloved Marine Corps drill Instructor...

No one who was involved in the car wreck, including Patton, thought that it was anything other than a tragic accident.

Patton’s friend General Hobart Gay knew that Patton was bored with occupation duty and Gay invited him to a day of pheasant hunting. They rode in a heavy Cadillac limousine with Patton riding shotgun.

General Gay was in the rear seat, which featured a large space between it and the partition separating the front from the back seats. The space was large enough to unfold the maps that officers often worked with.

There was a jeep following in their hunting party. A dog was in the open jeep, and dog lover Patton thought that the dog looked cold. Patton had his driver pull over and he put the dog in his spot, and Patton joined General Gay in the back.

Patton’s simple concern for a cold dog was his undoing. That, and the fact that this was before the era of seatbelts.

As they resumed their trip an Army deuce and a half going the other way turned left and the Cadillac hit it. The damage to the Cadillac was minor, but Patton was thrown into the partition and his neck was broken. He was the only one injured.

Patton was paralyzed from the neck down. He lived another 12 days before dying from pulmonary edema and heart failure.
