Beverly Hills poised to end most tobacco sales
Associated Press ^ | May 8, 2019 | John Rogers

The smoke hasn’t cleared yet, but Beverly Hills is poised to become the first U.S. city to end most tobacco sales.

The City Council in the world-renowned enclave of the rich and famous unanimously indicated Tuesday that it’s ready to snuff out most sales when it meets again on May 21.

The proposal currently contains a loophole allowing cigarette-loving tourists to obtain smokes at hotels. Three plush cigar lounges would also be exempt from the ordinance.

The city “has always taken the lead when it’s come to restricting smoking,” Mayor John Mirisch said. “Let us try to be a light to the other cities if we can.”

Beverly Hills already restricts the sale of menthol cigarettes and other flavored tobacco products and bans smoking in hotel rooms and restaurants.

Under the proposed law, 24 tobacco-selling establishments — mainly gas stations, grocery stores and convenience markets — would have to clear their shelves of cigarettes, cigars and other tobacco products beginning in some cases as early as next year. …

Come and listen to my story ‘bout a man named Jed
The millionaire oilman had retired to his spread
Then one fateful day, Jed lit up a cigar
And up rode the mayor in his self-driving car
Tesla, that is
Model 3
Very chic

Well, the mayor said, “Jed, you sure pay a lot in tax
“So, we hope you’ll consider this thing we call the patch.”
He said, “Boy, don’t you know that smoking’s gonna kill?”
So, Jed loaded up the truck and he headed to the hills
Ozarks, that is
Personal freedom
Red state

The gas station owner quoted in the piece asserts that cigarettes are 30% of his business. I don’t know if that figure is true, but I suspect there IS indeed a good chance that this ban will put him out of business. Gas station operators’ margins on gasoline are notoriously thin, a few cents per gallon. The fact that virtually every gas station I’ve ever seen prominently hawks cigarettes & soft drinks indicates that those products are a vital component of the economics of the gas station business. If Beverly Hills puts its gas stations out of business, its residents will have to drive additional miles to buy gas... thus adding to carbon emissions, contributing to smog, yada yada yada but the politicians likely don’t give a damn.

I am curious whether fellow FReepers believe that we as a society have had more success eliminating (1) demon rum, (2) illicit drugs or (3) tobacco?

My choice is to the statistically most addictive of these substances, what's yours?

Organized crime, gleefully rubbing its hands together at the prospect of selling bootleg tobacco in cities all over America.

Most “gas stations” these days are convenience stores that sell gas. The gas pumps are just a hook to get you into the store. At best a break even proposition when added insurance costs are factored in.

The big money makers at these places are coffee, beer/wine, soft drinks (especially fountain drinks), tobacco products and snacks.
