People have always hated those who lend them money—when it’s time to pay them back. Anti Semitism got its start in Europe, because Jews weren’t covered by the Church’s anti-usury rules. They could and did lend money at interest. I believe the Knights Templar also were punished by kings who didn’t want to have to pay back loans.
