Malaysian officials are disguising themselves as cooks and waiters to catch Muslims who don't fast during Ramadan.
Thirty-two enforcement officers from a local council in the Muslim-majority country are going undercover at food outlets as part of the scheme, the New Straits Times newspaper reported.
Muslims are required to fast from dawn until dusk during Islam's holiest month, unless there are special circumstances such as illness.
While Muslims in multi-ethnic Malaysia have traditionally followed a tolerant form of Islam, critics say conservative attitudes have been gaining ground in recent years.

I worked with for a Jewish firm, and the place was always closed for the high holidays. One fellow complained that instead of going to Temple, he went out to play golf.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Segamat Municipal Council (MPS) has refuted news reports claiming its enforcement officers go undercover at food stalls under its jurisdiction to track down those not fasting during Ramadan.
MPS president Mohd Masni Wakiman refuted claims in the report which claimed the council would deploy two officers who were “good at making roti canai, tea and mee mamak” for the undercover job.
“The news reports are incorrect and I never issued such a statement. It is beyond MPS’ jurisdiction to track down those not fasting. We can’t be deploying our enforcement officers to disguise themselves as cooks and waiters.
“Furthermore, there is no specific time limit for traders to do their business during this fasting month as per the business licences issued by MPS,” he said when contacted today.
Reports had quoted Mohd Masni as saying that MPS was working with the Segamat Islamic Religious Department to track down those not fasting, especially at stalls under MPS’ supervision.
The report had claimed that 32 officers, including two officers who were “good at making roti canai, tea and mee mamak”, would disguise themselves as cooks and waiters to catch those not fasting at the 185 food premises.
There are 185 licensed stalls and food outlets under MPS at 15 locations. These include Segamat, Bandar Putra IOI, Segamat Baru, Jalan Segamat Muar, Taman Yayasan, Buloh Kasap, Jementah, Batu Anam and Bandar Utama.
