Bobby Joe Long, who pleaded guilty to killing eight women in the Tampa, Florida, area in 1984, is scheduled to be executed by lethal injection Thursday night.
His was the first death warrant signed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis since he took office in January.
Long's attorneys had argued that lethal injection would be "cruel and unusual" because of Long's diagnosed history of epilepsy, saying he could suffer a seizure. The state Supreme Court denied Long's third appeal on Friday, saying Long's diagnosis had been known for at least 30 years and that it was too late to argue it now.
Long, 65, was sentenced to death for the murder of Michelle Simms, 22, whose body was found on the side of a road in the Tampa suburb of Lake City in May 1984.
He told investigators he hit Simms with a club and pushed her from his vehicle before slitting her throat. Authorities said he had also admitted raping about 40 women.
In a plea deal, Long pleaded guilty in 1985 to killing eight of the 10 women in whose deaths he was a suspect. He was sentenced to 33 life sentences for the eight murders, all of which took place in Hillsborough County.

“Long abducted, sexually assaulted, and murdered at least 10 women in the Tampa Bay Area in Florida during an eight-month period in 1984. He released one of his last victims, 17-year-old Lisa McVey, after raping her for a period of 26 hours. McVey provided information to the police that enabled them to track him down.”

Most of those on Death Row have had a longer life in prison than they would have had outside. There is no justice in taxpayers having to pay lawyers to appeal the sentences of self-admitted killers for decades.
