GENEVA (Reuters) - WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has suffered psychological torture from a defamation campaign and should not be extradited to the United States where he would face a “politicised show trial”, a U.N. human rights investigator said on Friday.Nils Melzer, the U.N. special rapporteur on torture who visited Assange in a high-security London prison on May 9 along with two medical experts, said that he found him agitated, under severe stress and unable to cope with his complex legal case.
“Our finding was that Mr. Assange shows all the symptoms of a person who has been exposed to psychological torture for a prolonged period of time. The psychiatrist who accompanied my mission said that his state of health was critical,” Melzer told Reuters in an interview in Geneva.

He knowingly received stolen documents and he knowingly released them. Those document covered a spectrum of US activities not just the ones that you highlighted.
IMO he was a basement dweller that was seeking notoriety as a hacker. Like most megalomaniacs he expected adulation from the world. In his world the consequences he is now facing were never supposed to happen.
FWIW, I think he is faking the drama to keep from being held accountable because he is already guilty as hell of doing it.
and I think he maneuvering for something to “trade” for leniency. What? We shall see!
The same deep state that’s actively trying to complete a coup against Trump is seeking revenge on Assange for hurting poor Hillary. Trump has to wrestle the deep state to the ground before he can do much about Assange.
That's my take. He's amoral, but not stupid.
