Garlic is the only thing that is growing for me in northern Illinois. Tomato plants about 3 inches high. My pepper plants got up to about 2 inches then the rabbits ate them. Farmers here gave up and will take their insurance. 2019 = write-off.

Here in Eastern MA it has been a cooler and largely overcast spring, plus the tomatoes and Butternut squash that I started from seeds I had saved (in screened dirt) did not grow much, since this year I did not have windows with much sun, and used cheap grow lights instead.

By 05/19/19 most all were planted in the garden, including some toms from Home Depot, which are the larger plants seen in the images below, and which are in the front since that faces South.

The soil has some bagged manure, lime and fertilizer and a little compost added to it, but it has a lot of rocks, and some clay. Trying to improve the soils a little every year, and I am seeing more worms, thanks be to God.

Thank God for the space to plant (very few apt. buildings in this densely populated city have the South and West facing yardage that gets much of any sun) which the landlord has let us plant on, and for the thousands of tomatoes and dozens of squash we have gotten out of this city plot over the past 5 years.

Still trying to get my tilling done. I bought a sprayer and am going to try that vinegar weedkiller recipe that’s been making the rounds. If it works, it will cut the number of tilling passes I need to do.

My mostly-finished chicken coop has been moved out to the farm. I need to attach the doors and close up some of the gaps, then build the runs for it. After that, if I can get my shed mostly built, me and the chickens will be able to move out there for the summer.

The next few days are supposed to be sunny. Hopefully I can get a lot of work done before the next rain.

We had a, for the most part, dry weekend here in Central Missouri. Folks around us were not so fortunate. There have been numerous levee breaks and over-toppings along the Missouri River over the past week. Farms, homes, roads, and a few towns are under water.

I tilled the weeds in the kitchen garden and got the last of my tomato plants in the ground on Saturday. If the rain holds off I plan to sow kale and collards sometime this week. A few hills of squash and canteloupe might be nice too.

Spent most of yesterday building a block wall near the new steps at the front of our house, and hauled some compost up for Mrs. Augie to use in one of her flower beds. She still has two flats of native perennials that need to be stuck in the dirt. She started with six flats so I have to admire her determination. The place should be a butterfly and hummingbird 5-star resort by the end of summer.
