University of Alabama rejects $26M gift after abortion flap
Associated Press ^ | June 7, 2019 | Blake Paterson

The University of Alabama gave back a philanthropist’s $26.5 million donation and took his name off the law school Friday, a week after he called on students to boycott the institution over the state’s new abortion ban.

Hugh F. Culverhouse Jr., a 70-year-old Florida real estate investor, said he has no doubt the board of trustees acted in response to his remarks, and he complained that the state of Alabama is only reinforcing its reputation as “the land of the backward,” full of “hicks.”

University officials emphatically denied the decision had anything to do with Culverhouse’s stand on the abortion law and said it was prompted instead by his attempts to dictate how the money should be spent. They did not elaborate.

Culverhouse’s pledge, announced in September, was the biggest contribution ever made to the university. In return, the law school was renamed the Hugh F. Culverhouse Jr. School of Law.

Within minutes of the trustees’ vote, a maintenance crew had removed his name and the university had wired him a $21.5 million refund of the money he had already given the university toward fulfilling his pledge. …

Based on comments from around the school, this wording of ‘minutes’ after the vote for the school maintenance crew to show up and remove the pretentious guy’s name was absolutely true. There might be more to the whole story, but he rubbed the trustees in the wrong way.

Wealthy decadent lowlifes try to validate their miserable existence by donating money to places that are willing to patronize them. Imagine the absurdity of naming a law school after this character.

The university should have waited until the end of the year to return the money. It would have messed up this guy’s charitable donations and associated tax consequences without the ability to timely rebalance before year end.

This country was built by hicks and deplorable who worked with their hands and many gave their lives for others. How can you honestly make millions of dollars on real estate?

After I was admitted to Harvard Law School, I attended orientation. Our 500-strong class was gathered in Memorial Hall, in historic Sanders Theater, where then-Dean Elena Kagan (now Supreme Court Justice) spoke to us. She informed us that the competition was over — we were in! No need to worry about the stuff we’d seen in The Paper Chase — we were all going to leave with degrees and jobs. Not just that — as graduates of Harvard Law, we were destined to rule the universe. She informed us of how many alumni were in the Senate, how many in Congress, how many on the Supreme Court. The battle was over upon our acceptance to the institution. …
After reading about Ben Shapiro’s interesting experience in Harvard Law (and the little exposé into the particularly vile character of Justice Kagan), the University of Alabama’s law school in my estimation has greatly improved in reputation particularly after this move.

Trump did it. Doubt that Culverhouse did, though; his character in this respect bears that out.

The University of Alabama’s School of Business is named after Hugh Culverhouse, Sr. Yes, that is his dad.

This nitwit didn’t even attend Alabama. He is a graduate of the University of Florida.

I don’t expect Florida even under DeSantis to vomit him out, although that would be fitting.

Good, it’s great (except nobody uses directionals here).

Can I ask why you want to move from Florida?

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” Matthew 19:23-24
